Choose the shape of your trip

City stories. Island walks.
The road north.

Choose by your available days and how much driving you want. These are three different journeys, each with a complete saved day plan.

Durations count the actual saved days, including arrival and departure. Highlands & Skye finishes in Inverness; the NC500 starts there and returns there. Skye is a separate journey from the north-coast loop.

Decide before you book

A good trip starts
with a little space.

Pick the overnight bases first. Let the walks and stops fit around the journeys, rather than adding every famous place to one day.

Make room for the remarkable

From castle rock
to northern headlands.

Four starting points from the collection. Match the outing to the route and the weather; a photograph does not tell you the walking conditions.

A word from your curator

Scotland rewards a little breathing room. I’d keep Edinburgh’s stories and food at the heart of a city visit, then give the Highlands and the north coast the slower days they deserve. Choose a few walks that suit the weather, book the small overnight stops early, and let the changing light set the pace.

Before you set off

Let the season
set the pace.

Edinburgh works as a city break throughout the year. The two saved driving routes are labelled May–September; that label does not guarantee outdoor access.

Spring & summer

Keep time outdoors flexible and book the small overnight stops before fixing the road trip.

Planning the longer days

Choose one main walk, then keep smaller stops optional. On Skye, a Storr hike and Quiraing walk need separate time and suitable conditions. In the north, do not use a passing place as a viewpoint car park.

Traffic Scotland driving advice

August in Edinburgh

A festival trip needs its own accommodation and ticket plan.

Check your festival dates

The Fringe lists 6–30 August 2027. Check the event you intend to visit; other Edinburgh festivals have their own dates. Compare the actual room terms and late-evening journey before booking.

Autumn & winter

Shorter daylight asks for shorter days on the road and lower-level alternatives.

Keep a weather alternative

Do not carry a summer driving plan into winter unchanged. Confirm seasonal attraction hours and ferry sailings. Keep hill walks conditional on the forecast and your experience, and check roads before each move.
