8 days in Scotland

North Coast 500

Scotland rewards a little breathing room. I’d keep Edinburgh’s stories and food at the heart of a city visit, then give the Highlands and the north coast the slower days they deserve. Choose a few walks that suit the weather, book the small overnight stops early, and let the changing light set the pace.

Before choosing the nights

Give the far north its own journey

Eight days beginning in Inverness, travelling up the east coast and back down the west. Two Assynt nights give the loop breathing room. This Fyno plan is an independent starting route, not an official NC500 itinerary or endorsement.

Single-track miles take time

Use passing places to let vehicles through and never park in them. Practise reversing your rental vehicle safely. Leave time for stops and slower traffic; a map’s distance is not the day’s driving time. Fill up before remote stages and verify charger access and operation for your vehicle.

Book real overnight stops

Reserve the actual stay or a designated campsite before the next stage. Scotland’s access rights do not extend to sleeping overnight in a vehicle. Follow local signs and permission; a viewpoint or beach car park is not an assumed overnight pitch. Check seasonal services before travelling.

Protect the transfer and departure days

The eight-day default runs Inverness → Dornoch → Caithness → Durness → Assynt (two nights) → Torridon → Inverness. The final day is the return drive to Inverness. It does not require Applecross or Bealach na Bà. That pass and parts of the B869 need separate vehicle-suitability checks if you add them.

Your 8-day route at a glance

Explore Scotland

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Arrive in the HighlandsInverness

Plan the day: Arrive in Inverness, collect the vehicle when practical and keep the Ness Islands walk flexible. Stock up and check the next stage before leaving the city.

If plans change: If arriving late, settle in and leave sightseeing for a future visit rather than pushing on to the coast.

Things to do

  1. Ness Islands Circuit1-2h

Suggested stay

Day 2East Coast CastlesDornoch

Plan the day: Head north along the east coast to the Dornoch base. Dunrobin Castle is farther north near Golspie; fit its seasonal opening around the drive and treat Loch Fleet as an optional shorter walk.

If plans change: If the castle is closed, keep a coastal or woodland day. Confirm the exact overnight address before driving north of it.

Things to do

  1. Dunrobin Castle & Gardens2-4h
  2. Loch Fleet Balblair Woodland Walk1-2hOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 3Stacks & Northern HeadlandsCaithness

Plan the day: Move to the Wick overnight in Caithness. Duncansby Stacks and Dunnet Head are separate coastal branches; choose the main headland and leave the other optional.

If plans change: Strong wind or poor visibility is a reason to skip exposed cliff paths. Keep away from unfenced edges and allow an unhurried drive back to the overnight.

Things to do

  1. Duncansby Stacks Coastal Walk1-2h
  2. Dunnet Head Viewpoint30mOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 4Across the North CoastDurness

Plan the day: Travel west across the north coast to Durness. Smoo Cave and Balnakeil are local choices after the main transfer. Road miles do not predict the pace of single-track sections.

If plans change: Shorten the stops if the drive takes longer. Cave access and any boat trip depend on conditions; do not assume an interior tour is operating.

Things to do

  1. Smoo Cave Waterfall Chamber1h
  2. Balnakeil Beach1-2h

Suggested stay

Day 5Into AssyntAssynt

Plan the day: Move south into Assynt. Ardvreck is beside Loch Assynt, while the saved overnight is at Lochinver; check the actual route between them rather than treating Assynt as one town.

If plans change: Make the drive and overnight the priority in poor conditions. Keep Ardvreck a short stop only if parking and access are suitable.

Things to do

  1. Ardvreck Castle Ruins30m

Suggested stay

Day 6Assynt Geology & RestAssynt

Plan the day: Keep the second Assynt night. Knockan Crag is a separate outing from Lochinver; use this day for geology and time to rest rather than adding a long mountain hike.

If plans change: Choose a shorter local outing if the weather is poor. This pause can absorb disruption without removing every margin from the next day.

Things to do

  1. Knockan Crag Geology Trail1h

Suggested stay

Day 7Wester Ross LandscapesTorridon

Plan the day: Head towards Wester Ross and the Torridon overnight. Victoria Falls and the Beinn Eighe woodland trail are near Loch Maree/Kinlochewe; choose one if the transfer is slow.

If plans change: Keep the woodland or waterfall visit short and optional. The woodland trail is not a summit ascent of Beinn Eighe.

Things to do

  1. Beinn Eighe Woodland Trail1hOptional add-on
  2. Victoria Falls at Loch Maree30mOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 8Return to InvernessTorridon → Inverness

Plan the day: Return to Inverness before your onward journey. Keep this final day for the drive; the default has no planned sightseeing stops or overnight. Leave a generous margin for your actual departure.

If plans change: Keep a generous departure margin or add an Inverness night. The saved loop does not require the Bealach na Bà or an Applecross detour.

Things to do

Keep this day flexible for travel and exploring.
