7 days in Scotland

Highlands & Skye Adventure

Scotland rewards a little breathing room. I’d keep Edinburgh’s stories and food at the heart of a city visit, then give the Highlands and the north coast the slower days they deserve. Choose a few walks that suit the weather, book the small overnight stops early, and let the changing light set the pace.

Before choosing the nights

Two city days. Then the Highland road.

Seven days from Edinburgh through Glencoe and Skye to Inverness. Two city days leave five for the road, including your departure. This is a one-way Edinburgh-to-Inverness trip. Skye is not part of the NC500 loop.

Bridge or ferry? Choose before booking

The bridge avoids a sailing reservation. The Mallaig–Armadale ferry makes a different journey, including the drive to Mallaig, check-in and the drive from Armadale to the overnight near Portree. CalMac recommends reserving vehicles and runs fewer winter services. Check the actual sailing and alerts.

One main island outing a day

The saved Trotternish day lists Storr and a Quiraing viewpoint walk. Choose Storr as the main hike and leave the second outing optional. Poor visibility, wind or footing may call for a lower-level day. Book Skye accommodation before fixing the rest of the route.

Protect the transfer and departure days

Edinburgh → Glencoe and Glencoe → Skye are transfer days. Keep the local walks optional if the drive or sailing uses the margin. Skye → Inverness includes Urquhart Castle only if opening and arrival time allow. If flying from Edinburgh instead, add a separate return journey.

Your 7-day route at a glance

Explore Scotland

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Arrive & Old TownEdinburgh

Plan the day: Arrive in Edinburgh and keep the Old Town stories walk flexible. The default’s first two nights are in the city.

If plans change: If arrival is late, shorten the walk rather than starting the Highland drive tired.

Things to do

  1. Edinburgh Old Town Stories3h

Suggested stay

Day 2Castle & Scottish FoodEdinburgh

Plan the day: Plan castle admission first, then fit the food walk around its timeslot. Arrange the car pickup for your departure from Edinburgh.

If plans change: Use an indoor museum alternative if conditions or ticket availability change. Keep tomorrow’s departure simple.

Things to do

  1. Edinburgh Castle2-4h
  2. Edinburgh Food Walk3h

Suggested stay

Day 3Into GlencoeGlencoe

Plan the day: Make Edinburgh to Glencoe the main journey. The Lochan circuit and visitor centre are local choices once you arrive, not two deadlines to beat after the drive.

If plans change: Keep only the shorter local stop if the transfer takes longer than expected. Stay near the booked overnight rather than adding a distant detour.

Things to do

  1. Glencoe Lochan Circuit30m
  2. Glen Coe Visitor Centre1-2h

Suggested stay

Day 4Skye Water & MountainsSkye

Plan the day: Move from Glencoe to Skye. Choose the road via the bridge or a booked Mallaig–Armadale sailing; the ferry includes the drive to Mallaig, check-in and the onward island drive. Fairy Pools is conditional on arrival time and weather.

If plans change: Drop Fairy Pools if the crossing or road takes longer. The bridge is a different driving route, not an instant substitute from the ferry queue.

Things to do

  1. Fairy Pools Walk1-3h

Suggested stay

Day 5Trotternish LandformsSkye

Plan the day: Keep Trotternish local from the Portree-area overnight. Choose Storr as the main hike; the Quiraing viewpoint walk is optional, with separate driving, parking and daylight needed.

If plans change: If cloud, wind or footing is poor, shorten the outing or use a lower-level town day. The viewpoint walk is not the separate Quiraing hill circuit.

Things to do

  1. Old Man of Storr Hike2-4h
  2. Quiraing Viewpoint Walk30mOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 6Loch Ness ArrivalInverness

Plan the day: Return to the mainland and move towards Inverness. Urquhart Castle is an optional timed stop, not a reason to rush the transfer or arrive after the last admission.

If plans change: Travel straight to the overnight if weather or traffic uses the margin. Recheck the castle’s opening times for your date.

Things to do

  1. Urquhart Castle1-3hOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 7Highland FarewellInverness

Plan the day: Keep the Inverness farewell for your actual departure connection. This is an Edinburgh-to-Inverness journey, not a loop back to Edinburgh.

If plans change: If your flight leaves Edinburgh or Glasgow instead, add a separate return journey and reconsider the final overnight before booking.

Things to do

Keep this day flexible for travel and exploring.
