A quick way to choose

Let your days
choose the address.

Choose the address first, then compare room types and rates for your dates. The same neighborhood can feel different from one street to the next.

First city break

Choose Old Town for the historic lanes, or Waverley’s edge if the rail arrival matters most. Check the climb from station to hotel.

Compare the kitchens at Eden Locke and Adagio. They offer different sides of the city and different apartment layouts.

Old Town & Canongate

Stay here when the Royal Mile, closes and evenings in the Old Town are the heart of your visit. The tradeoff is the terrain: Waverley sits below the ridge, and the shortest line on a map may involve a steep climb or steps. Ask the hotel for a luggage-friendly arrival route and a room that fits your noise preferences.

For a short visit with a rail arrival

Waverley & the Old–New Town edge

Choose the station area when you want both halves of the city within reach. It is convenient, but “near Waverley” does not mean a level or step-free journey. Pick the station exit and hotel entrance together, especially with heavy luggage. The Balmoral is on Princes Street; Market Street and North Bridge sit on the Old Town side.

New Town & North Bridge

New Town suits a city stay built around cafés, galleries and meals beyond the Royal Mile. You still cross the valley and climb for Old Town days. Eden Locke is on George Street; The Scotsman is on North Bridge, at the connection between the two halves rather than deep inside New Town.

For a base away from the Royal Mile

West End & Haymarket side

Look west if you prefer to return to a residential setting after sightseeing. The extra distance matters if you plan repeated Old Town visits or late festival shows. The Bonham is in the West End; The Roseate is farther west on West Coates. Check the bus or tram connection for your actual address instead of treating both as a Royal Mile walk.

The details that matter

Check the last part
of the journey.

An address can be central and still be awkward with a suitcase. Confirm the approach, room and event dates together.

Arrival & hills

Ask for the best route from your station exit or tram stop. St Andrew Square serves the Waverley area, with a further walk to the hotel. Confirm step-free access, lifts and the exact entrance if mobility matters.

Questions before you book

Where should I stay on a first visit to Edinburgh?

Start with Old Town for historic streets or the Waverley area for a short rail-based visit. Choose New Town if a George Street studio or its café and dining streets fit your trip better. Compare the exact address and route uphill before deciding.

Do I need a car in Edinburgh?

The saved city route uses walking and public transport. A car adds parking decisions without removing the hills. If you continue to Glencoe and Skye, arrange the rental around the day you leave the city and confirm pickup and return terms.

Which stays have a kitchen?

Eden Locke lists kitchens and lounge areas in its studios and suites. Adagio Edinburgh Royal Mile lists a private kitchen in every apartment type. Confirm the exact bedding and occupancy for your party before booking.

What changes during the Edinburgh festivals?

Check the dates and venues for each event before fixing your base. The Fringe lists 6–30 August 2027. Confirm actual room availability, cancellation terms and your evening transport; this guide does not establish festival rates or available rooms.
