I’d keep Clava Cairns in mind for a stop in Inverness.
More about this place
Clava Cairns is a compact prehistoric landscape where stone circles and burial monuments invite a slower, more reflective kind of visit. The power comes from the arrangement of the stones and the questions they leave, rather than a reconstructed spectacle.
Allow about forty-five minutes to follow the public visitor approach and look around the open monuments, returning to the same access area. Keep this as a visit to the actual archaeological site; television associations are not evidence that a particular fictional event or character belongs to its history.
Check the official access notice before travelling and wear shoes suitable for uneven outdoor ground. Respect the stones and any barriers, avoid climbing on the remains and leave the site undisturbed. There is no need to book an unrelated paid tour simply to make a free-standing site visit possible, though guided interpretation can be chosen separately.
