Where to stay in Hawaii

Choose the island before the hotel. Oʻahu suits a Waikīkī base with city and coast days; Maui gives you beach bases and a demanding Hāna drive; Kauaʻi rewards a north–south choice; Hawaiʻi Island works better with Kona and Volcano time apart. Add a second island only when you can protect its travel day.

Make the trip fit you

Pick the shape of your stay

One island for four or five days

The four-day Oʻahu and Kauaʻi plans and five-day Maui and Big Island plans keep the short holiday on one island. Choose the experience you care about rather than trying to fit a second airport visit into the same break.

Two islands for the nine-day plan

The saved island hop pairs Oʻahu with Maui and protects day four for the flight and ground transfers. Price airfare, bags, airport transport and a new rental together. Compare one-way or different-island international arrivals and departures only after checking the actual schedule; there is no fixed transfer price in this guide. [13]

Oʻahu: Waikīkī or a quieter edge

The Surfjack is the selected Waikīkī town base; Kaimana places you at the Diamond Head end. Local walks and transit can reduce car days, while the North Shore needs its own transport plan. Compare hotel parking with a car only on excursion days.

Maui: choose your coast before the room

Kāʻanapali and Nāpili favor West Maui time. Kīhei and Wailea put you on the southern side. Pāʻia, Kahului and Hāna solve different arrival or road-trip needs. A Hāna overnight changes the drive, not just the view from the room. [3]

Kauaʻi: south first, north later

The saved trip uses Poʻipū for three nights and then Princeville above Hanalei Bay. Keep south-side visits together. In a four-day holiday, a hotel change consumes time; choose one coast if unpacking once matters more than following the complete default. [17][10][18]

Hawaiʻi Island: Kona, Kohala, Hilo or Volcano

Kona and Kohala are western beach and ocean bases; Hilo is a town on the eastern side, while Volcano is closer to the park. NPS puts Kailua-Kona to the park at 2–2½ hours via Highway 11, versus about 45 minutes from Hilo. Those are one-way, no-stop estimates. [9]

Lānaʻi: plan a separate extension

Lānaʻi is its own island, not a Maui neighborhood. The source has a Lānaʻi region label but no saved stays, activities or itinerary. No Lānaʻi hotel recommendation is implied here. Confirm the current connection and ground transfer independently before considering an extension. [13]

Compare the complete bill

Request the final amount for the same dates, room and party. Check mandatory fees, tax, parking, cancellation and included transport. A lower room headline can still mean a higher trip total once you add a car and another island transfer. This collection does not show live rooms or a comparable price ranking.

Questions before you go

Which island is best for a first trip?

Start with the days and interests: Oʻahu for city and beach variety, Maui for coastal bases and scenic driving, Kauaʻi for gardens and landscapes, or Hawaiʻi Island for coffee country and volcanic scenery. The nine-day route combines Oʻahu and Maui; four- or five-day plans stay on one island.

Can I stay in Kona and visit the volcano every day?

It is possible to drive, but it is a substantial daily return. NPS estimates 2–2½ hours each way from Kailua-Kona via Highway 11 before stops. The saved route moves to Volcano instead. [9]

How much does changing islands cost?

There is no verified fixed fare here. Compare airfare for your dates, bags, airport rides or parking, car return and a second pickup. Protect check-out, airport and check-in time as well as the flight.

Are these bookable hotels for my dates?

They are existing places in Fyno’s collection. Open an individual stay guide to check the provider’s dates, room, occupancy, final total and terms. Inclusion does not confirm availability.
