Choose Kāʻanapali or Nāpili for West Maui beach days, Kīhei or Wailea for a South Maui base, and Hāna when the coastal road deserves an overnight. Kahului and Pāʻia solve different arrival and road-trip needs. No single hotel makes Hāna, the summit and every beach a short outing.
OUTRIGGER Kāʻanapali Beach Resort is selected in both saved routes. Nāpili Kai and The Mauian sit farther northwest. Choose this side when the beach and nearby coastal time are the main point; allow a longer approach to Hāna and Haleakalā. Go Hawaiʻi estimates about 50 minutes from Kahului Airport to Kāʻanapali, and one hour to Kapalua, before traffic or stops. [3]
Kīhei & Wailea: a southern base
Maui Coast Hotel provides a Kīhei town option; Andaz, Four Seasons and Hotel Wailea are in the Wailea area. Hotel Wailea has a hillside setting, so confirm the beach connection directly. Go Hawaiʻi publishes airport estimates of about 30 minutes to Kīhei and 40 minutes to Wailea. These are not travel times from the hotel to every outing. [3]
Hāna: spend a night on the other side
Hana-Maui Resort is the saved island-hop overnight, with the return to Kāʻanapali the next day. Go Hawaiʻi puts Kahului Airport to Hāna at roughly 2¾ hours before scenic stops. The approach from West Maui is longer. Select safe public stops, book Waiʻānapanapa entry and leave room for check-in before dark. Check HDOT’s current roadwork and lane controls before fixing the journey. [3][5][16]
Maui Seaside is in Kahului; Paia Inn is in the North Shore town of Pāʻia. They can support an airport night or the start of a Hāna journey, but neither is a substitute for the particular resort beach you wanted. Compare the exact address, parking and arrival arrangements.
Haleakalā: summit and coast are separate districts
Hosmer Grove is in the summit district; Kīpahulu is on the coast beyond Hāna. They are separately reserved campgrounds with different road approaches. General vehicle entry for sunrise from 3 to 7 a.m. needs a sunrise reservation plus the park entrance fee. NPS says Hosmer Grove campers receive sunrise access for the morning after their reserved night; check the exact booking and park rules. [7][14][15]
The Maui-only route returns to Kāʻanapali after Hāna on day three; shorten the stops for the return. Its five saved days do not include Haleakalā. The nine-day island hop adds an optional summit outing and an overnight in Hāna. Choose the route that matches the experience rather than adding both to an already full day.
Use designated visitor areas and legal parking, respect private land and follow current local recovery and access guidance. A hotel operating on one part of the island does not establish access to every nearby road or neighborhood. Check the latest visitor guidance before the trip. [4][3]
Book the visit as well as the bed
Non-resident entry and parking reservations apply at ʻĪao Valley and Waiʻānapanapa. Summit sunrise has a separate NPS reservation. Keep a weather or no-ticket alternative, and compare final accommodation totals including mandatory fees and parking. Confirm the final room total and availability with the provider for your dates. [6][5][7][18]

12 stays
01 · Kāʻanapali · West Maui
The saved beach base in both Maui routes. Convenient for West Maui time; Hāna and the summit require separate long outings.
A South Maui alternative to Kāʻanapali. Choose it around Wailea days and your actual driving plans, rather than treating the two coasts as interchangeable.
A reservation-dependent campground in the summit district. It is not a beach hotel or the coastal Kīpahulu campground; confirm the exact campsite reservation and equipment.
A separate coastal national-park campground beyond Hāna. Confirm its reservation and road approach; do not navigate to the summit entrance for this stay.
Choose around the coast where you want most of your beach time. Kāʻanapali is the saved route’s West Maui base; Wailea is a South Maui alternative. Compare the full transport plan and final hotel total, rather than expecting one coast to put every outing nearby.
Is a Hāna overnight worth changing hotels?+
It gives you separate outward and return days and quieter time in East Maui. The saved nine-day route does this; the five-day Maui route returns to Kāʻanapali. Choose fewer stops for a day trip, or deliberately add the night. [3]
Does booking a hotel include park entry?+
Do not assume so. Check the particular entry, parking or sunrise arrangement. Hosmer Grove is a specific exception: NPS says campers receive sunrise access for the morning after their reserved night. The campsite and the park entry fee remain separate arrangements. [5][6][15]
Can I use the summit entrance to reach Kīpahulu?+
The summit district and coastal Kīpahulu district have different road approaches. Plan the correct entrance for the actual campsite and outing; do not treat the two district names as one location. [7]
