Give each island its own time
Use the three saved Kona days for arrival, coffee and history, and the bay cruise. Day four moves to Volcano via Punaluʻu; day five is the park day. NPS estimates Kailua-Kona to the park at 2–2½ hours via Highway 11 before stops, compared with about 45 minutes from Hilo. The selected Kona Village hotel is north of Kailua-Kona, so add its approach and check the actual route.
Keep the journey workable
Car or arranged transfers; separate Kona and Volcano. Saved activity durations exclude airport, road, parking and check-in time. The final day also has a saved hotel; arrange a departure day or revise it explicitly.
Compare islands and overnight bases →Keep a flexible day
Check volcanic alerts, air quality and sea conditions. Check local conditions again before setting off. A booking does not establish safe swimming, trail access or a guaranteed wildlife or eruption sighting.
Check Hawaiʻi ocean safety →Compare all five routes · Check current park closures

Day 1Kona Arrival & RestKona Coast
Plan the day: Arrive and settle into the actual hotel. The saved arrival rest stop means flexible downtime; it does not require a separate attraction visit or drive.
If plans change: If arrival is late, go straight to the hotel and move any supplies stop to tomorrow.
Things to do
Suggested stay
Day 2Kona Culture & CoffeeKona Coast
Plan the day: Choose a coffee visit and a respectful visit to Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau. Add the drive from the north-of-Kona hotel, opening times and meal breaks; these are two visits, not a whole coast to complete.
If plans change: If timing is tight, keep the cultural visit or the coffee tour as the main outing and move the other.
Things to do
Suggested stay
Day 3Kealakekua Water DayKona Coast
Plan the day: Keep the Kealakekua cruise as the day’s main commitment. Confirm the actual departure harbor, check-in, swim requirements and marine conditions with the operator.
If plans change: If the operator cancels, use town or coffee-country time. Do not replace a cancelled cruise with an improvised unassessed shore entry.
Things to do
Suggested stay
Day 4Kona to VolcanoHilo & Volcano
Plan the day: Move to Volcano with Punaluʻu as a conditional stop. NPS estimates 2–2½ hours from Kailua-Kona to the park via Highway 11 before stops; the saved hotel starts farther north. Add packing, the beach stop and the final approach.
If plans change: Skip the stop if weather or timing calls for a direct transfer. Keep wildlife space and use designated access at Punaluʻu.

Day 5Kīlauea DayHilo & Volcano
Plan the day: Check NPS alerts and air quality before choosing Kīlauea Iki or Nāhuku. Lava visibility is never guaranteed. The saved default retains Volcano House after this final day; arrange departure after it or change the night deliberately.
If plans change: Use open park viewpoints or a shorter permitted walk if trails, volcanic gases or weather make the planned hike unsuitable. Do not cross closures.
