9 days in Hawaii

First-Time Island Hop

I love Hawaiʻi most when the trip leaves room to feel each island rather than racing through a checklist. Choose one or two strong bases, learn the stories behind the landscapes, and let beach time count as real travel—not empty space between sights.

Hawaiʻi · Two islands, one protected flight day

Give each island its own time

Days one to three stay in Waikīkī. Day four is reserved for the flight to Maui, car pickup and the move to Kāʻanapali. Day six stays in Hāna and day seven returns to the west coast. Keep both transfer days light; a short flight is only one part of an airport-to-hotel move. For a shorter holiday, choose a single-island plan instead of squeezing nine days into seven.

Keep the journey workable

Inter-island flight plus separate ground transport. Saved activity durations exclude airport, road, parking and check-in time. The final day also has a saved hotel; arrange a departure day or revise it explicitly.

Keep a flexible day

Reserve access; allow swaps for boats and summit weather. Check local conditions again before setting off. A booking does not establish safe swimming, trail access or a guaranteed wildlife or eruption sighting.

Your 9-day route at a glance

Explore Hawaii

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Waikīkī ArrivalOʻahu

Plan the day: Arrive in Waikīkī and keep the first day local. The Surfjack is an inland Waikīkī base; leave the beach time flexible around the flight and check-in.

If plans change: Eat and rest near the hotel if the arrival is late; the beach does not need a fixed appointment.

Things to do

  1. Waikīkī Beach Time2-6h
Day 2Pearl HarborOʻahu

Plan the day: Arrange the Pearl Harbor visit around the specific program. USS Arizona reservations are through Recreation.gov; the visitor-center visit and other Pearl Harbor attractions have different arrangements. Add transport and security time.

If plans change: If the memorial program is unavailable, plan the accessible visitor-center exhibits and check other sites separately rather than promising the same boat visit.

Things to do

  1. Pearl Harbor National Memorial2-4h
Day 3North Shore TownsOʻahu

Plan the day: Use one North Shore outing for towns and food stops, with the return to Waikīkī. Observe surf from a safe place; a famous surf beach is not a promise of swimming conditions.

If plans change: If roads, weather or sea conditions are poor, keep a Honolulu culture or food day and return the car earlier if the booking permits.

Things to do

  1. North Shore Surf Towns & Food Trucks3-5h
Day 4Oʻahu to MauiMaui

Plan the day: Protect the Oʻahu-to-Maui flight day. Add hotel checkout, airport transfer, airline check-in, bags, Maui car pickup and the drive to Kāʻanapali. Buy the actual connection before treating this as a confirmed transfer.

If plans change: Leave sightseeing off the arrival schedule. A delay should cost a flexible evening, not a non-refundable excursion.

Things to do

Keep this day flexible for travel and exploring.

Day 5Optional HaleakalāMaui

Plan the day: Haleakalā is optional. Vehicle entry from 3–7 a.m. requires a sunrise reservation plus the park entry fee. NPS releases reservations up to 60 days ahead and a smaller batch two days ahead. Add the long pre-dawn approach from West Maui and warm layers.

If plans change: Without a sunrise ticket, choose a rested later visit during permitted hours or a beach day. Do not drive up exhausted after the island transfer.

Things to do

  1. Haleakalā Sunrise2-3hOptional add-on
Day 6Hāna Coast StopsMaui

Plan the day: Drive toward Hāna with only a few safe stops. Book the Waiʻānapanapa entry and parking slot before the drive; Hāna town and Keʻanae are choices around that appointment. Stay at the saved Hana-Maui Resort rather than returning west tonight.

If plans change: Skip optional roadside stops when rain, traffic or daylight makes them a poor fit. No swimming in floodwater, closed areas or unassessed pools.

Things to do

  1. Keʻanae Peninsula Coastal Stop30mOptional add-on
  2. Waiʻānapanapa Black Sand Beach1-2h
  3. Hāna Town & Bay1hOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 7Hāna Return & RestMaui

Plan the day: Return from Hāna to Kāʻanapali with breaks and legal pullouts. Keep the day light; do not add a summit drive on top. Go Hawaiʻi’s airport-to-Hāna estimate is about 2¾ hours before stops, and West Maui adds another approach.

If plans change: Use the legal, open route advised locally and by the rental company. If access is disrupted, contact the hotel and operator before setting out.

Things to do

Keep this day flexible for travel and exploring.

Day 8Molokini MorningMaui

Plan the day: Treat Molokini as the main morning outing. Confirm the departure harbor and check-in time rather than assuming the boat leaves from Kāʻanapali. Conditions and operator decisions determine whether the trip runs.

If plans change: Use a land day if the operator cancels. The booking does not guarantee a particular snorkel site or wildlife sighting.

Things to do

  1. Molokini Crater Snorkeling4-6h
Day 9Central MauiMaui

Plan the day: Choose ʻĪao Valley around its non-resident entry and parking reservation, then make Maui Ocean Center optional if time and departure plans allow. The final saved hotel is still Kāʻanapali; no flight home is included in the nine days.

If plans change: If valley access is closed, use the aquarium or town time. Add a separate departure day or shorten this day explicitly for your flight.

Things to do

  1. ʻĪao Valley Rainforest Walk1-2h
  2. Maui Ocean Center1-3hOptional add-on
