4 days in Hawaii

Oʻahu City & Surf

I love Hawaiʻi most when the trip leaves room to feel each island rather than racing through a checklist. Choose one or two strong bases, learn the stories behind the landscapes, and let beach time count as real travel—not empty space between sights.

Give each island its own time

Keep Waikīkī as the base for all four saved days. Use local walks or transit for town time, then compare a rental car with booked transfers for Pearl Harbor, the North Shore and Hanauma Bay. Include parking charges and the return journey when comparing the cost.

Keep the journey workable

Walk locally; arrange transport for island days. Saved activity durations exclude airport, road, parking and check-in time. The final day also has a saved hotel; arrange a departure day or revise it explicitly.

Keep a flexible day

Year-round base; choose ocean days by conditions. Check local conditions again before setting off. A booking does not establish safe swimming, trail access or a guaranteed wildlife or eruption sighting.

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Waikīkī ArrivalOʻahu

Plan the day: Keep the Waikīkī arrival day local around the Surfjack base. Compare walking and transit with paying to park a rental car for a day you mostly spend in town.

If plans change: Rest near the hotel after a late arrival and move beach time to another day.

Things to do

  1. Waikīkī Beach Time2-6h
Day 2Pearl HarborOʻahu

Plan the day: Plan Pearl Harbor around the specific attraction and program. USS Arizona Memorial reservations use Recreation.gov. Add the journey from Waikīkī and security restrictions; other museums have their own tickets.

If plans change: Use the visitor-center exhibits or a Honolulu culture day if the memorial program cannot be arranged.

Things to do

  1. Pearl Harbor National Memorial2-4h
Day 3North Shore TownsOʻahu

Plan the day: Give the North Shore its own day and the return to Waikīkī. Compare a rental car with a tour or planned transit journey using the actual stops; parking and traffic change the tradeoff.

If plans change: If roads or weather are poor, keep a city food and history day. View winter surf from a safe distance instead of assuming a swim.

Things to do

  1. North Shore Surf Towns & Food Trucks3-5h
Day 4Hanauma Bay dayOʻahu

Plan the day: Keep today for Hanauma Bay. Diamond Head is a separate visit with its own entry arrangements. The bay is normally closed Monday and Tuesday; admission-only reservations open two days ahead at 7 a.m. HST. The city also links advance transport-and-entry options.

If plans change: Swap days to fit the bay’s opening and your ticket. Without access or suitable conditions, choose a local land day. If adding Diamond Head, arrange its separate non-resident reservation and enough time.

Things to do

  1. Hanauma Bay Snorkeling2-4h
