Arenal & the northern plains: places and practical plan

Choose La Fortuna for the waterfall, Bogarín and volcano outings. Río Celeste, the western lakeshore and Río Perdido are separate bases within this broad collection.

Make the time count

The practical plan

  1. Choose the shape of the day

Choose one main walk, then a shorter outing. A move to Bijagua or Bagaces changes the next morning’s starting point. [1]

  2. Allow for the approach

Drive around Lake Arenal to reach Monteverde; a lake transfer is a separate passenger service, not a ferry for your rental car. Confirm the final lodge approach. [1]

8 places
  1. 01 · Bijagua / Tenorio approach

A brief roadside tree stop near the Río Celeste corridor, rather than a La Fortuna town attraction. Use the saved pin to check the approach; do not build a trip around unverified age or cultural legends.

  2. 02 · Arenal 1968, west of La Fortuna

Choose the Arenal 1968 private trail for lava-field scenery and volcano views when visibility allows. Its admission is separate from Arenal Volcano National Park; this is not a summit climb.

  3. 03 · La Fortuna

A forest walk near La Fortuna for a slower wildlife-focused morning. Decide whether you want a guide and leave time to observe quietly; a sloth sighting is not guaranteed.

  4. 04 · La Fortuna waterfall approach

Plan for the steps down to the waterfall and the climb back up. Check the operator’s conditions before entering the water; a short curated visit allowance does not include the journey or a relaxed swim.

  5. 05 · Lake Arenal, near the dam

A viewpoint and short walking stop on the lake-and-volcano side of Arenal. Choose it for the scenery rather than treating it as another full volcano hike.

  6. 06 · Mistico, near Lake Arenal

Choose a hanging-bridge circuit for a different view of the forest canopy. Confirm the actual route, guide and mobility requirements; a bridge circuit is not a zipline ticket.

  7. 07 · Tenorio Volcano National Park / Bijagua

Give Río Celeste its own Tenorio outing. SINAC describes the full out-and-back trail as about 6 km and three hours; the waterfall-only visit is shorter. Conditions can change the trail and water appearance.

  8. 08 · Venado de San Carlos

Choose a guided cave outing only if the wet, confined terrain suits your group. Confirm clothing, footwear, age limits and weather cancellation rules directly with the operator.
