Make the time count

The practical plan

  1. Choose the shape of the day

Keep beach outings flexible around sea conditions. The Pacific dry-season calendar does not describe this coast. [1]

  2. Allow for the approach

Allow a substantial travel day from San José. Confirm the exact hotel pickup, road conditions and return before pairing the coast with a flight. [1]

4 places
  1. 01 · Gandoca–Manzanillo, south Caribbean

Choose the actual refuge sector and walking or guided activity before arranging transport. Keep to authorized routes, avoid disturbing wildlife and confirm current access locally.

  2. 02 · Playa Negra, west of Puerto Viejo

A black-sand beach on the Caribbean side, west of Puerto Viejo. It is a different locality from Guanacaste’s Playa Negra; use the coast and saved pin when arranging a stay or transfer.

  3. 03 · Punta Uva, south Caribbean

Choose an unhurried beach outing from the Puerto Viejo corridor. Snorkeling or kayaking depends on the day’s sea conditions and the particular operator; calm-looking water is not a safety guarantee.

  4. 04 · Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

A south Caribbean town base for food, beach time and nearby coastal outings. This is Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, not Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí; specify the full name for transfers.
