Where to stay in Costa Rica

Choose your overnight bases before comparing rooms: La Fortuna, Monteverde, Tamarindo, the south Caribbean and Tortuguero need different arrival plans.

Make the time count

The practical plan

  1. A forest base or a moving route?

La Fortuna suits the waterfall and volcano corridor; Monteverde needs its own mountain base. The Highlights plan also moves to Río Perdido in Bagaces. Staying anywhere in the Arenal curation group does not make all three local.

  2. Choose one coast for a short trip

Tamarindo and Puerto Viejo are different holidays with a substantial cross-country move between them. Keep a five-day escape on its selected coast, including airport transfers.

  3. A boat connection is part of the stay

Tortuguero lodges need a confirmed final boat connection. Downtown San José hotels serve city time; Peace Lodge in Vara Blanca serves a mountain stay. [11]
