Lakes for your Dolomites trip
Choose a lake by the visit it requires: Braies for a shore visit, Sorapis for exposed mountain terrain, Carezza for a short stop and Tovel for a valley outing. Garda is a separate northern Italy extension.

Before you set off
A lakeshore stop or a mountain walk?
Shore access and a mountain hike differ
Sorapis requires a substantial hike with exposed sections. Do not rank it as an easy substitute for Braies or Carezza merely because the photograph shows a lake. [5]
Group by your actual base
Keep eastern Braies/Sorapis, western Tovel and Garda in the appropriate sections of the journey. Choose the visit instead of trying to collect every lake.
Questions before you go
Which lake visits do not require a full mountain hike?
Braies has shore access and Carezza can be a short lakeshore stop. Tovel needs a valley approach and parking plan. Sorapis is a substantial mountain walk with exposed sections. [2][14][5]
Are Tovel and Braies in the same part of the trip?
No. Tovel is on the Brenta/Val di Non side, while Braies is in the northeast. Keep each with the appropriate base rather than planning from their similar lake photographs.
