A one-way Rockies journey, with seven nights
The saved plan has eight days: three nights in Banff, two at Lake Louise and two in Jasper, then an Edmonton departure. Day 4 sleeps at Lake Louise and Day 6 sleeps in Jasper, despite their broader day-region groups. Allow a full Icefields Parkway day.
Move the base with the route
Calgary airport–Banff: allow about 1½–2 hours. Banff–Lake Louise: about 1 hour. Lake Louise–Jasper: roughly 3–4 hours before sightseeing. Jasper–Edmonton airport: about 4–5 hours before stops and check-in. These are planning allowances in favourable conditions, not live traffic estimates.

Park entry, shuttle reservations, hotel rooms and timed excursions are separate products. The 2026 lake shuttle season has ended; check the next official season. Recheck Jasper’s specific open areas. Visit Peyto Lake before the Columbia Icefield when travelling north.

Your 8-day route at a glance
Explore CanadaStart with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.
Day 1Arrive in BanffBanff
Plan the day: Allow about 1½–2 hours from Calgary airport to Banff before stops, plus rental pickup and arrival formalities. Keep Bow Falls and Vermilion Lakes flexible around the flight. Sleep in Banff.
If plans change: If arrival is late, go straight to the hotel. Keep both short outings for a daylight gap.
Things to do
Suggested stay
Day 2Banff above and belowBanff
Plan the day: Give the gondola a clear weather window; Cave and Basin is a separate visit. Check the booked gondola time and site opening hours rather than treating the two entries as continuous access.
If plans change: Use the indoor history visit when it fits the opening hours; move the mountain view if conditions obscure it.
Things to do
Suggested stay
Day 3Minnewanka and Two JackBanff
Plan the day: Match the cruise to its confirmed departure. Stewart Canyon and Two Jack are separate walking stops; keep the extra walks short if the cruise already fills the day. Return to the same Banff hotel.
If plans change: If the cruise is cancelled, choose an open shore walk with suitable conditions, rather than assuming boat operations.
Things to do
- Lake Minnewanka Cruise2h
- Stewart Canyon Walk1-2hOptional add-on
- Two Jack Lake Shore Walk1h
Suggested stay
Day 4Move to Lake LouiseBanff
Plan the day: Visit Johnston Canyon en route, then continue north. Allow about 1 hour of direct Banff–Lake Louise driving before the canyon detour and walking. Tonight’s stay is at the lakeshore, although the saved day is grouped under Banff.
If plans change: If the walk or lake access takes longer, simplify the sightseeing and protect check-in. Confirm the hotel’s own arrival and parking instructions.
Things to do
Suggested stay
Day 5Moraine Lake, with a reservationLake Louise
Plan the day: Keep the day around the confirmed lake transport. Most visitors cannot drive a personal car to Moraine Lake. Use the correct reserved departure point and leave time for queues and the return. Sleep at Lake Louise again.
If plans change: If access is unavailable, keep a Lake Louise day that is actually reachable. Do not replace a missing reservation with an attempted drive.
Things to do
Suggested stay
Day 6North along the Icefields ParkwayLake Louise
Plan the day: This is a full 232 km travel day to Jasper. Allow roughly 3–4 hours at the wheel before stops in favourable conditions. Visit Peyto Lake before the Columbia Icefield when driving north, even though the saved activity list is in the opposite order. Confirm the icefield tour time. Tonight is Jasper.
If plans change: If the timed icefield excursion makes the drive too tight, shorten or omit that booking and preserve the onward journey. Check 511 and closures before departure.
Things to do
Suggested stay
Day 7A full Jasper dayJasper
Plan the day: Confirm Maligne Lake road access, the cruise and current park restrictions. Pyramid Island is a separate outing nearer Jasper; leave it as a flexible second stop. Return to the same Jasper base.
If plans change: Use a specifically open local option if a road, trail or cruise is unavailable; check the current closure map rather than an older reopening article.
Things to do
- Maligne Lake Cruise2h
- Pyramid Island Walk1hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 8Edmonton departureJasper
Plan the day: Allow about 4–5 hours of direct driving from Jasper to Edmonton airport before breaks, road delays, rental return and airline check-in. Choose a flight with that full margin, or add an airport night.
If plans change: A Calgary departure is a different, longer return plan. Rework the final night and drive rather than keeping an incompatible flight.
Things to do
Keep this day flexible for travel and exploring.
