Start with your kind of day

The classics. The creative.
The slower side.

Amsterdam is the focus of this collection. Compare the actual starting plans, rather than trying to fit the whole Netherlands into one trip.

Start with four, five or eight days. Shorter and longer options change the stop list. These are city itineraries; the eight-day route also reaches Amsterdamse Bos.

Two decisions that shape the trip

A well-placed stay.
A well-timed visit.

Choose the area you want to come home to, then give your most important museum a place in the day.

A few places to begin

Canals, galleries.
A little green space.

Combine one anchor visit with time outside. These are selected places from the collection, not a list to finish.

Somewhere to come back to

Pick the setting.
Then the room.

A canal house, converted church, park-side hostel or waterfront hotel. Each puts a different part of the city on your doorstep.

A word from your curator

Roman’s perspective on the wider country. This collection currently covers Amsterdam.

I love how much the Netherlands fits into a small country: canal-side art, bold modern architecture, quiet cycling paths, and wide North Sea beaches. Start with Amsterdam, then follow your curiosity into another city or the countryside. Give each place time—linger over a café lunch, explore on foot or by bike, and leave room for an unexpected stop along the water.

Before you go

A little planning.
More room for the day.

Spring and summer give outdoor days more daylight; autumn and winter suit a museum-led pace. Keep a weather swap in every season.

Stay in one city

These three routes focus on Amsterdam, with an Amsterdamse Bos outing in the longer plan.

Does this cover the whole Netherlands?

Use Amsterdam as one base. Rotterdam, Utrecht, the coast and tulip gardens are not in these saved routes. Add another destination only when you have allowed for its own travel day and current opening season.

A car can stay out of the plan

Walk within each area, then use public transport or the right IJ ferry between them.

How do I get around Amsterdam?

GVB’s IJ ferries are free for foot passengers. Buiksloterweg serves Eye and A’DAM; NDSM is a different landing for STRAAT. Check the live journey planner. When using contactless payment on trams, metro or buses, check in and out with the same card or device.

Choose your anchor visit

Fix your most important museum slot, then build the rest of that day around it.

What should I book before arriving?

Anne Frank House sells timed tickets through its own website, releasing visits six weeks ahead on Tuesdays at 10:00 CET. Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum also require a start time. A City Card does not include Anne Frank House or Van Gogh and does not replace reservations.
