Amsterdam · A first visit, with the classics
Give each side of the city its time.
The 4-day starting plan stays in Amsterdam. Give each anchor visit enough time and leave room for connections, meals and the weather. The listed visit allowances cover the activity itself.
Book the anchor, then the day
Reserve Anne Frank House through its official ticket release if it is essential to your trip. Rijksmuseum requires a start time too. Keep a nearby outdoor walk flexible rather than adding another compulsory museum.
Plan the museum bookings →Choose your side of the IJ
The saved overnights suggest BUNK, a Noord stay near Noorderpark. It needs a metro or ferry connection to the central days; it is not beside Eye. Compare a canal-belt, park-side or eastern base if those days matter more to you.
Compare the stay areas →Walk first, then use the right connection
Buiksloterweg serves Eye and A’DAM; NDSM serves the wharf and STRAAT. They are different ferry landings. GVB’s IJ ferries are free for foot passengers; check the current service and onward journey. On trams, metro and buses, check in and out with the same contactless card or device.
These routes do not require cycling. If you hire a bike, use cycle lanes, signal turns, keep off pavements and avoid stopping in moving bike traffic. On foot, cross cycle lanes carefully and keep them clear while checking directions.

Day 1Canals & JordaanAmsterdam
Plan the day: Start with the canal ring and Nine Streets, then continue into Jordaan. Keep the evening cruise separate from the walking allowance; check its actual departure pier and boarding time. Respect residential courtyards and enter only where access is permitted.
If plans change: In rain, shorten the outdoor loops and make the cruise a decision based on the operator, boat and weather. A museum replacement needs its own opening and ticket check.
Things to do
- Amsterdam Canal Ring & Nine Streets Walk2-3h
- Jordaan & Hidden Courtyards Walk1-2h
- Evening Canal Cruise1hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 2Masters & De PijpAmsterdam
Plan the day: Reserve the Rijksmuseum start first and give it the morning. Vondelpark and De Pijp are two possible changes of pace afterwards; choose a shorter park break if you want time at the market before it closes.
If plans change: Albert Cuyp Market normally closes Sundays. On that day, keep De Pijp as a neighbourhood walk or choose the park; do not promise market stalls. In heavy rain, spend longer in the galleries and omit the park.
Things to do
- Rijksmuseum2-5h
- Vondelpark1-3hOptional add-on
- Albert Cuyp Market & De Pijp Food Walk1-3h
Suggested stay
Day 3Memory & WestAmsterdam
Plan the day: Build the day around the Anne Frank House reservation. Het Schip is farther west and normally opens Tuesday–Sunday, 11:00–17:00; check its tour time before combining it with Westerpark. The museum is the priority if you want to visit both.
If plans change: If this lands on Monday, move the Het Schip visit to another day or keep a shorter western neighbourhood walk. A sold-out Anne Frank slot is not solved by arriving at the door.
Things to do
- Anne Frank House1h
- Museum Het Schip1-2h
- Westerpark & Westergas1-3hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 4Noord WaterfrontAmsterdam
Plan the day: Take the Buiksloterweg ferry for Eye, the waterfront and A’DAM. Check Eye’s exhibition dates and A’DAM’s own entry options; both are separate from a walk along the IJ. Leave a departure margin if this is your last day.
If plans change: Eye’s November 2026 notice closes exhibitions on Mondays except 16 November; daily opening resumes 19 December. If the exhibition is unavailable, keep the waterfront short or choose a separately ticketed film.
Things to do
- EYE Filmmuseum1-3h
- Buiksloterweg Waterfront Walk45m
- A’DAM Lookout1-2hOptional add-on
