Amsterdam · A longer stay, without changing cities
Give each side of the city its time.
The 8-day starting plan stays in Amsterdam, with a green outing to Amsterdamse Bos. Give each anchor visit enough time and leave room for connections, meals and the weather. The listed visit allowances cover the activity itself.
Book the anchor, then the day
Reserve Anne Frank House through its official ticket release if it is essential to your trip. Van Gogh also requires timed entry. Keep a nearby outdoor walk flexible rather than adding another compulsory museum.
Plan the museum bookings →Choose your side of the IJ
The saved overnights suggest BUNK, a Noord stay near Noorderpark. It needs a metro or ferry connection to the central days; it is not beside Eye. Compare a canal-belt, park-side or eastern base if those days matter more to you.
Compare the stay areas →Walk first, then use the right connection
Buiksloterweg serves Eye and A’DAM; NDSM serves the wharf and STRAAT. They are different ferry landings. GVB’s IJ ferries are free for foot passengers; check the current service and onward journey. On trams, metro and buses, check in and out with the same contactless card or device.
These routes do not require cycling. If you hire a bike, use cycle lanes, signal turns, keep off pavements and avoid stopping in moving bike traffic. On foot, cross cycle lanes carefully and keep them clear while checking directions.

Your 8-day route at a glance
Explore NetherlandsStart with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.
Day 1Canal RhythmAmsterdam
Plan the day: Let the canals set the pace: the Nine Streets walk, a short Houseboat Museum visit and an evening cruise are separate choices. Confirm the houseboat’s opening and the cruise departure pier before using either as the fixed part of your day.
If plans change: Shorten the canal walk in rain and choose one confirmed indoor visit. Keep time for a meal between the daytime loop and an evening sailing; you do not need to fill the gap with another attraction.
Things to do
- Amsterdam Canal Ring & Nine Streets Walk2-3h
- Houseboat Museum30m
- Evening Canal Cruise1hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 2Van Gogh & VondelparkAmsterdam
Plan the day: Fix the Van Gogh timed entry first. Leave the Museumplein walk and Vondelpark as an unhurried afternoon outside, rather than stacking another major gallery onto the booking.
If plans change: If it is wet or you want longer with the collection, shorten the park and square. Any second museum needs its own ticket and time; proximity on Museumplein does not establish availability.
Things to do
- Van Gogh Museum1-3h
- Museumplein Architecture & Sculpture Walk45mOptional add-on
- Vondelpark1-3h
Suggested stay
Day 3Jordaan to WesterparkAmsterdam
Plan the day: Anchor the day on the Anne Frank House time, then give Jordaan room before continuing towards Westerpark. Courtyards are residential spaces: respect posted access and keep closed gates out of the route.
If plans change: If you cannot secure Anne Frank House, keep the neighbourhoods and choose a separately confirmed visit on another day. This reservation cannot be treated as a same-day rain fallback.
Things to do
- Anne Frank House1h
- Jordaan & Hidden Courtyards Walk1-2h
- Westerpark & Westergas1-3hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 4De Pijp & Green SouthAmsterdam
Plan the day: De Pijp and Amsterdamse Bos are different outings. Choose the market and architecture walk, or take a lighter city morning and leave a generous part of the day for public transport to the Bosbaan loop and the return.
If plans change: On Sunday the Albert Cuyp Market normally closes. In wind or persistent rain, omit the Bos and stay in De Pijp with a confirmed indoor option. The forest loop’s walking allowance excludes the journey from the city.
Things to do
- Albert Cuyp Market & De Pijp Food Walk1-3h
- De Pijp Architecture & Design Walk1-2h
- Amsterdamse Bos Bosbaan Loop Walk2hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 5Plantage & OostAmsterdam
Plan the day: Hortus in Plantage and Wereldmuseum beside Oosterpark are separate visits. Choose which gets the longer stop, then use the park walk as a break. Check the Dappermarkt’s own opening before expecting stalls.
If plans change: Move the Wereldmuseum visit off a normal Monday unless its holiday calendar confirms opening. On a wet day, keep the indoor collection and shorten the garden or park rather than adding another cross-city journey.
Things to do
- Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam1-2h
- Wereldmuseum Amsterdam2-3h
- Oosterpark & Dappermarkt Walk2hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 6Noord Film & ViewsAmsterdam
Plan the day: Use the Buiksloterweg ferry for the Eye area, waterfront and A’DAM. A film screening, exhibition and viewpoint each have their own admission and timing. Keep one as the anchor and leave room to sit by the water.
If plans change: Eye’s November 2026 notice closes exhibitions on Mondays except 16 November, with daily opening returning 19 December. Check installation periods too. Change the indoor plan or move this day if the exhibition is the reason for crossing.
Things to do
- EYE Filmmuseum1-3h
- Buiksloterweg Waterfront Walk45m
- A’DAM Lookout1-2hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 7NDSM Creative ShoreAmsterdam
Plan the day: Take the NDSM ferry for a distinct wharf-and-STRAAT day. This is not the same landing as yesterday’s Eye visit. Explore the outdoor work when conditions suit, with STRAAT as the indoor focus.
If plans change: STRAAT opens at noon on Mondays and publishes event exceptions; check the actual date before crossing. IJ-Hallen is not in the saved day and does not run daily, so do not assume there is a flea market.
Things to do
- NDSM Wharf & Makers Walk1-3hOptional add-on
- STRAAT Museum1-3h
Suggested stay
Day 8Courtyards & Food HallAmsterdam
Plan the day: The Begijnhof, De Hallen and Museum of the Canals span different parts of the city. Keep the final day around the visit that matters most and the luggage or airport connection. Check courtyard access rather than treating every gate as public.
If plans change: In rain, shorten the courtyards and choose the canal museum or food hall according to current opening. Drop the cross-town food-hall journey if it competes with your departure margin.
Things to do
- Begijnhof & Historic Courtyards Walk1h
- De Hallen & Foodhallen1-3hOptional add-on
- Museum of the Canals1h
