Give each side of the city its time.

The 5-day starting plan stays in Amsterdam. Give each anchor visit enough time and leave room for connections, meals and the weather. The listed visit allowances cover the activity itself.

Book the anchor, then the day

Stedelijk, Foam, Van Loon, Wereldmuseum, STRAAT and Eye shape this arts route. It does not include Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum or Anne Frank House by default. Check Monday closures before fixing the day order. Keep a nearby outdoor walk flexible rather than adding another compulsory museum.

Plan the museum bookings →

Choose your side of the IJ

The saved overnights suggest BUNK, a Noord stay near Noorderpark. It needs a metro or ferry connection to the central days; it is not beside Eye. Compare a canal-belt, park-side or eastern base if those days matter more to you.

Walk first, then use the right connection

Buiksloterweg serves Eye and A’DAM; NDSM serves the wharf and STRAAT. They are different ferry landings. GVB’s IJ ferries are free for foot passengers; check the current service and onward journey. On trams, metro and buses, check in and out with the same contactless card or device.

These routes do not require cycling. If you hire a bike, use cycle lanes, signal turns, keep off pavements and avoid stopping in moving bike traffic. On foot, cross cycle lanes carefully and keep them clear while checking directions.

Your 5-day route at a glance

Explore Netherlands

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Modern MastersAmsterdam

Plan the day: Make Stedelijk the main collection of the day. Museumplein provides a short outdoor break, then continue to De Pijp if you want food and street life. The route does not also include a Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh visit today.

If plans change: Check Stedelijk’s current programme and hours. Albert Cuyp Market normally closes Sundays, so keep a Sunday De Pijp stop about the neighbourhood rather than the market. In rain, shorten the square walk.

Things to do

  1. Stedelijk Museum2-4h
  2. Museumplein Architecture & Sculpture Walk45mOptional add-on
  3. Albert Cuyp Market & De Pijp Food Walk1-3h

Suggested stay

Day 2Photos & Canal HousesAmsterdam

Plan the day: Foam and Museum Van Loon both sit along Keizersgracht. Allow separate visit time and a meal between photography and the canal house, with the Nine Streets loop as the flexible outdoor finish.

If plans change: Foam normally stays open later on Thursday and Friday, which can free up the earlier day. Check exhibitions and accessibility first; older canal-house interiors are not a guaranteed step-free backup.

Things to do

  1. FOAM Photography Museum1-2h
  2. Museum Van Loon1-2h
  3. Amsterdam Canal Ring & Nine Streets Walk2-3hOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 3Global OostAmsterdam

Plan the day: Give Wereldmuseum a substantial part of the day, then choose a shorter Oosterpark walk or the brewery visit. The Dappermarkt and brewery are additional stops with their own hours, not compulsory parts of one continuous museum visit.

If plans change: Wereldmuseum is normally closed Mondays except its listed holiday dates. Move the Oost day, or keep it as a neighbourhood day and choose another confirmed indoor visit. Do not assume the brewery or market is open.

Things to do

  1. Wereldmuseum Amsterdam2-3h
  2. Brouwerij ’t IJ Brewery Visit1-2hOptional add-on
  3. Oosterpark & Dappermarkt Walk2h

Suggested stay

Day 4Noord Art & FilmAmsterdam

Plan the day: NDSM and STRAAT belong together. Eye is by a different ferry landing at Buiksloterweg, so plan an actual onward connection if you want both. With lunch and travel, two indoor visits plus the wharf make a full day.

If plans change: Choose STRAAT or Eye as the anchor if you want a slower day. STRAAT opens later on Mondays and has date-specific closures; Eye’s November 2026 exhibition notice also restricts Mondays. Check both before fixing the sequence.

Things to do

  1. NDSM Wharf & Makers Walk1-3h
  2. STRAAT Museum1-3h
  3. EYE Filmmuseum1-3hOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 5West Design & FoodAmsterdam

Plan the day: Het Schip lies north of Westerpark; De Hallen is farther south in Oud-West. Visit the architecture museum during its opening window, then decide how much park time and travel to the food hall fits. The saved order is a set of choices, not an efficient door-to-door schedule.

If plans change: Het Schip normally closes Mondays. Swap the whole West day with a day whose museums are open, or make this a park-and-food day. Keep the trip to De Hallen optional if you are departing.

Things to do

  1. Westerpark & Westergas1-3h
  2. De Hallen & Foodhallen1-3hOptional add-on
  3. Museum Het Schip1-2h
