More about this place
Kīlauea Iki & Nāhuku Lava Tube is Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park’s essential on-foot experience, descending through rainforest to a solidified lava lake and then entering a fern-framed lava tube.
Steam vents, crater walls, and the changing texture underfoot make the volcanic process tangible even when no eruption is visible. The crater trail is exposed and uneven; the lava tube is shorter and easier.
Allow three to five hours for the crater hike, lava tube and local parking transitions. The crater loop alone generally takes two to three hours; choose the road viewpoints instead if you prefer to avoid the descent and climb.
