More about this place
Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau Historic Park is a sacred coastal complex where carved kiʻi, royal grounds, fishponds, and the Great Wall illuminate traditional law, refuge, and chiefly life.
Walk slowly and use the cultural demonstrations and interpretive stops to understand why this is more than a collection of picturesque structures. The black-lava shore is beautiful but not a swimming area.
Allow one to three hours for the historic grounds, coastal setting and interpretation. A focused visit is worthwhile; leave longer if you want to follow more of the stories and paths.

Treat the grounds as a living sacred place—stay on paths, avoid climbing walls, and save snorkeling for nearby Two Step outside the park boundary.
