More about this place
Castel Sant’Angelo is a former imperial mausoleum that became a papal fortress, prison, and museum beside the Tiber. Its changing rooms and defenses reveal those layers, before the upper terrace opens onto views of Rome and the river.
Allow about two hours to follow the museum route and enjoy the terrace. Reserve ahead for busy weekends, use the current official ticketing page, and check Monday closures and last admission. The free walk across Ponte Sant’Angelo is separate from museum entry; Passetto di Borgo visits require their own selected product.
Expect stairs and changes of level in the historic building. Current access works can alter the circuit, and wheelchair access covers only part of the outdoor spaces. There is no cloakroom, so arrive with a small bag and leave bulky luggage elsewhere. Ordinary pets are not admitted.
