10 days in Italy

Sardinian Adventure

I like to choose an Italian region for its own rhythm, then give it enough time. Rome rewards long walks between ancient landmarks and neighborhood tables; Florence and Tuscany pair Renaissance art with vineyards and hill towns. In the Dolomites, the mountains and the season set the pace, while Sardinia calls for coastal drives, clear-water coves, and time in its villages. My favorite approach is to leave breathing room between the famous sights. Choose a city trip, a Tuscan or Sardinian road journey, or an alpine adventure from this collection, then let the smaller moments become part of the trip.

Sardinia · a moving island journey

Choose the coast, then give it time.

The ten-day starting plan uses five bases: Cagliari, Bosa, Alghero, Porto Cervo and Cala Gonone. It includes nine selected nights and no final Cagliari stay. The third and last days are substantial transfers, so keep the sightseeing list short.

Protect the long move

Porto Flavia is on the southwestern mining coast; tonight’s Bosa hotel is much farther north. Make the visit or a direct transfer the priority. On the final day, Barumini and the airport need their own time buffers.

Compare the five bases →

Let the sea day move

The cave and Gulf of Orosei trips depend on the operator, actual harbour and sea conditions. Keep the Cala Gonone day flexible, confirm the hotel-to-harbour connection and choose a land-based alternative when needed.

Your 10-day route at a glance

Explore Italy

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Arrive in CagliariCagliari

Plan the day: Keep the first day in Cagliari. Collect the car only when it suits the onward road trip, and confirm the hotel’s unloading and parking instructions.

If plans change: A late arrival is a reason to stay local, rather than drive to the southern beaches.

Things to do

  1. Cagliari Town3-6h

Suggested stay

Day 2Nora and the southern shoreCagliari

Plan the day: Nora and Tuerredda are outside Cagliari. Put the archaeological visit or beach time first; confirm seasonal beach admission before committing to both.

If plans change: Use a Cagliari city day if beach access, wind or timings do not work.

Things to do

  1. Nora Archaeological Park1-2h
  2. Tuerredda Beach1-3h

Suggested stay

Day 3The mining coast, then BosaWest Coast

Plan the day: Porto Flavia is an excursion on the southwestern coast, while tonight’s Palazzo Pischedda is in Bosa. This is one of the trip’s longest driving days; allow roughly 4–5 hours at the wheel via the coastal stop, before visits and breaks. Recheck your exact route.

If plans change: Choose the booked mining visit or a direct move to Bosa; do not add more southwestern beaches to this transfer.

Things to do

  1. Porto Flavia1-2h
Day 4Bosa to AlgheroWest Coast

Plan the day: Leave time in Bosa before the coastal drive to Alghero. Alma di Alghero is on Via Lido, outside the old-town core; plan parking and the evening walk separately.

If plans change: Move directly to Alghero if the weather makes the scenic drive less appealing.

Things to do

  1. Bosa Town2-4h
  2. Alghero Town1-2h

Suggested stay

Day 5Capo Caccia from AlgheroAlghero

Plan the day: Treat Capo Caccia as the main outing and return to the same Alghero stay. Check the exact cave or boat operation if you want more than a viewpoint visit.

If plans change: Stay with Alghero’s lanes and waterfront if sea or access conditions change.

Things to do

  1. Capo Caccia2-4h

Suggested stay

Day 6Castelsardo to GalluraAlghero

Plan the day: Castelsardo is a stop on the move to the Costa Smeralda, not an Alghero neighbourhood. Allow around 2½–3½ hours of driving for the day’s overall journey, before a town visit and breaks; use a current route estimate.

If plans change: Shorten the town stop and reach the selected Porto Cervo stay with daylight and check-in margin.

Things to do

  1. Castelsardo1-2h
Day 7A Gallura village and beachCosta Smeralda

Plan the day: San Pantaleo and Spiaggia del Principe are separate outings from the Porto Cervo base. Confirm beach access and parking locally, then give the day room to be a holiday.

If plans change: Choose one outing or remain around your base when heat, wind or crowds make the pair unappealing.

Things to do

  1. San Pantaleo Village2-3h
  2. Spiaggia del Principe1-2h
Day 8Move to Cala GononeEast Coast

Plan the day: The saved Brancamaria stay is in Cala Gonone, not a generic east-coast location. Allow roughly 2–3 hours from Porto Cervo before stops, and arrange the cave excursion around its actual departure harbour.

If plans change: Use this as a transfer day; keep caves or a boat for the following day if check-in and departure times clash.

Things to do

  1. Bue Marino Caves2-3h

Suggested stay

Day 9A sea day in the Gulf of OroseiEast Coast

Plan the day: Confirm the boat’s meeting point, route, sea conditions and cancellation terms. A boat itinerary does not guarantee every beach landing or swimming stop.

If plans change: Keep a land-based Dorgali or Cala Gonone day when the operator changes or cancels the sailing.

Things to do

  1. Gulf of Orosei Boat Tour7-9h

Suggested stay

Day 10Barumini and the returnCagliari

Plan the day: The move from Cala Gonone to Cagliari via Barumini is a substantial drive: allow roughly 3½–4½ hours before the archaeological visit and breaks. The saved plan selects no final overnight.

If plans change: Add a Cagliari night before an early flight, or simplify the last day and protect the departure buffer.

Things to do

  1. Su Nuraxi di Barumini1h
