More about this place
Basilica di San Pietro is the monumental Vatican basilica built over the traditional burial place of Saint Peter, with Michelangelo’s Pietà, Bernini’s baldachin, and a vast sequence of chapels beneath the dome. Enter the nave slowly, then move through the side spaces as services and visitor access allow.
Admission to the main basilica is free, but everyone passes security and queues can be substantial. Allow one to two hours for the interior and a realistic queue buffer outside that visit time. Dress for a working place of worship: cover shoulders and knees, keep your voice low, and follow the staff’s current rules during ceremonies.
The dome is a separate paid experience, with narrow stairs and a demanding final climb even when an elevator is included. Add time and check that product’s current booking arrangements if you want the panorama; it is not included in the free basilica visit. Travel with small bags, confirm storage arrangements before bringing luggage, and leave ordinary pets behind. Religious services can change access, so check the official basilica page shortly before visiting.
