More about this place
Pololū Valley Lookout & Hike is a dramatic Hawaiʻi Island descent from a cliff-edge viewpoint into forest and down to a rocky black-sand beach. The lookout alone delivers the broad valley-and-coast composition, while the trail adds changing vegetation, a closer sense of scale, and the demanding climb back to the road.
Short mileage should not be mistaken for an easy outing. Mud, heat, and the return ascent make the hike substantial, and the beach is a scenic endpoint rather than a swimming destination because currents can be severe. Turn back early enough to complete the climb before weather or fatigue changes the experience.

Original curator notes · check current details.
Park only where directed, carry more water than the distance suggests, and keep the return climb out of the hottest part of the day.
Afternoon rain can make the trail slick very quickly.
