I’d keep New York City Ballet's The Nutcracker in mind for a stop in New York City.
More about this place
New York City Ballet's The Nutcracker is George Balanchine’s landmark holiday ballet, pairing Tschaikovsky’s score with the growing Christmas tree, crystalline snow scene, lavish Land of Sweets, and the scale of NYCB’s full company at Lincoln Center.
The performance runs about two hours including the intermission. Allow two to three hours for the complete visit, including security and finding your seat. The story is especially approachable for families: Marie’s Christmas Eve party becomes a battle with mice, a snowy journey, and a procession of character dances led by the Sugarplum Fairy.
Book through New York City Ballet and choose seats with a clear full-stage view; much of the pleasure comes from formations, scenery, and stage effects rather than close-up detail. The production is recommended for ages five and older, late seating and re-entry are not permitted, and every patron—including a child sitting on a lap—needs a ticket.
