New York City · Five saved days
A first visit, with room between the icons
Five saved days connect Midtown, Lower Manhattan, Central Park, Brooklyn and the downtown neighborhoods. The route is a starting point: a major museum or island visit deserves the best part of a day.
Keep the day geographically close
Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens are connected by transit, but a borough name is not a walking cluster. As an editorial planning buffer, allow 30–60 minutes for a cross-town or interborough journey, then check the exact door-to-door trip with MTA. Queues, stairs and service changes can add time.
Compare the four routes →Check the reservation that shapes the day
Reserve the island ferry before fitting Broadway around it. The ticket time is the security-queue time, not a guaranteed sailing. Allow a broad gap for the return to Midtown and the theater’s own arrival instructions.
Compare hotel bases & room layouts →Subway, stroller and weather checks
Use contactless payment or OMNY and check the train’s letter or number, direction and current service. With a stroller, choose an accessible station where possible and check elevator status. MTA says to fold strollers and carry children on stairs and escalators. Keep one nearby indoor alternative and move outdoor walks when weather calls for it.

Your 5-day route at a glance
Explore New York CityStart with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.
Day 1Midtown ArrivalNew York City
Plan the day: Keep arrival day in Midtown. Grand Central, Rockefeller Center and Times Square form a useful first cluster; fix the observation-deck slot only after allowing for arrival and hotel check-in.
If plans change: If the flight runs late or visibility is poor, leave the skyline visit for another day and keep a short neighborhood walk.
Things to do
- Grand Central Terminal1-2h
- Top of the Rock1-2hOptional add-on
- Times Square30m
Suggested stay
Day 2Harbor & BroadwayNew York City
Plan the day: Use an early island departure and protect several hours for security, both islands and the return. The NPS ticket time is for joining security, not a guaranteed sailing. Leave a generous gap before the trip back to Midtown and Broadway.
If plans change: If the islands consume the day, keep the theater booking and shorten the harbor visit. A harbor-view walk is an alternative, not entry to Liberty or Ellis Island.

Day 3Park & Museum MileNew York City
Plan the day: Choose the Met or Guggenheim as the main museum, then take the Central Park walk at a comfortable pace. Trying to absorb both museums makes the park the squeezed part of the day.
If plans change: Keep the second museum optional. In rain, spend longer in the first rather than racing between buildings.
Things to do
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art2-5h
- Bethesda Terrace & Bow Bridge1h
- Guggenheim Museum1-3hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 4Brooklyn WaterfrontNew York City
Plan the day: Walk the bridge from Manhattan toward DUMBO, then continue to Brooklyn Heights. The Transit Museum is a separate indoor visit: check its opening day and last admission before fitting it in.
If plans change: In strong wind or rain, take the subway to Brooklyn and make the museum the anchor; shorten the waterfront walk.
Things to do
- Brooklyn Bridge Walk1-2h
- DUMBO Waterfront & History Walk1-2h
- Brooklyn Heights Promenade30m
- New York Transit Museum1-3hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 5Downtown NeighborhoodsNew York City
Plan the day: Start with Chinatown food and a reserved Tenement Museum tour, then travel or walk onward to the Village if you still have time. The museum is a guided experience, not an open-ended building to drop into.
If plans change: If a tour is unavailable, keep the neighborhood walk and food stops; allow the airport-transfer buffer before adding the Village.
Things to do
- Chinatown Dim Sum & Dumpling Walk3h
- Tenement Museum1-2h
- Greenwich Village History Walk1-2hOptional add-on
