Museum of the City of New York is a story-driven museum about how New York was built, governed, imagined, and reinvented. Start with the panoramic Timescapes film, then choose exhibitions on activism, neighborhoods, popular culture, architecture, or the city’s future rather than trying to read every label.

The museum is compact enough for a focused two-hour visit and especially useful early in a trip, when its maps and social history sharpen what you notice elsewhere. General admission covers the permanent and special exhibitions; everyone receives free admission on Wednesdays, while NYC residents may pay what they can on other days.

Pair the museum with the northern end of Central Park or El Museo del Barrio. The building is accessible and the experience works well in poor weather.
