More about this place
Catacombs by Candlelight is a guided history tour beneath the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, where a quieter layer of New York survives below the streets of Nolita. The underground passages and family vaults tell stories of the communities, clergy and influential residents connected with the city’s first Catholic cathedral. The experience is atmospheric and reflective, with history and place providing the interest.
The visit extends beyond the catacombs into the old cathedral’s grounds and normally restricted areas. Time in the walled cemeteries and church gives the underground rooms their context, connecting the architecture and memorials with immigration, religion and neighborhood life. Expect a mix of outdoor walking and indoor interpretation rather than a long underground maze or a theatrical haunted-house attraction.
Allow around two hours including check-in for the guided visit, which usually lasts about 80–90 minutes. Meet at 266 Mulberry Street beside the old cathedral; this is a different church from the better-known St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. It remains an active religious site, so services and ceremonies can affect access or the tour schedule.
2 expert tips
Original curator notes · check current details.
Dress respectfully and wear comfortable walking shoes, with rain protection if the forecast is wet. A substantial part of the visit takes place outside, and costumes are inappropriate for the working basilica and burial spaces.
Check your booking messages before setting out, especially on a day when the church may be hosting a wedding or funeral. The guide’s historical storytelling makes this particularly rewarding for older children who enjoy history and can be comfortable in dim, enclosed spaces.
