More about this place
Tharros And Capo San Marco is a coastal archaeological and walking area on the Sinis Peninsula, where Phoenician, Punic and Roman remains face the sea. Ancient streets, domestic foundations and bath complexes reveal successive layers of the city, while the surrounding headland opens toward the Gulf of Oristano and the open Mediterranean.
Keep the ticketed archaeological site and the outdoor headland walk as separate parts of the visit. Allow around two hours for a focused stop, with more time for a longer coastal circuit or an optional visit to the separately ticketed Tower of San Giovanni. The watchtower is distinct from the ancient ruins; tower access can be limited by weather. Uneven ground, sun and wind make sturdy shoes, water and realistic walking time useful even on a short visit.
From parking in San Giovanni di Sinis, allow for the roughly 500–800m pedestrian approach to the site. The archaeological area's opening window shortens in winter, with Monday closures from November through March, as well as December 25 and January 1. Check the current last-entry time and any exceptional restrictions before driving out. Shade is limited; an early visit is more comfortable in hot weather, and the headland walk should be shortened when conditions are exposed.
