I’d include Livorno for a castle visit.

More about this place

Livorno is a Tuscan port city whose canals, waterfront, and mercantile history give it a different character from the inland hill towns. The Venezia district’s waterside lanes and the harbor-facing streets make an appealing walk without a packed museum schedule.

Allow two to three hours for a central stroll and a food stop, choosing a compact route around the canals and market area. The Mercato delle Vettovaglie is the covered central market, rather than a second outdoor market of the same name. Check current stall opening hours before counting on a shopping visit.

The old fortress and city museums can extend the day, but their interiors and any canal boat tour are separate visits with their own access or tickets. A walk to the more distant waterfront terraces also needs extra time. Cruise passengers should allow for port access and return transport rather than using the whole shore interval for sightseeing.
