More about this place
Basilica di Santa Maria Novella is a Dominican church and museum complex whose marble facade leads to some of Florence’s great frescoes. Look for Masaccio’s Trinity, the painted Tornabuoni Chapel, and the crucifixes by Giotto and Brunelleschi before continuing into the cloisters.
Allow one to two hours for the church and museum route, including the Green Cloister and Spanish Chapel. Sightseeing requires a ticket; access for prayer follows different arrangements. Check the official timetable because religious services and holidays can change visiting hours, and last entry is earlier than closing.
Wear clothing suitable for a working church, keep voices low, and travel without bulky luggage or trolley bags. Ordinary animals are not admitted. Follow the current photography rules and staff directions; flash and tripods are prohibited, and planned professional filming requires separate authorization.
