Best time to visit Sardinia
For a mixed road trip, start by comparing May–June with September. For a beach-led holiday, lean toward summer and early autumn; for long walks, favor spring or autumn and keep the weather flexible. Your coast, access bookings and tolerance for heat matter more than one “best” month.

ARPAS 1981–2010 station normals, tables 2a and 3a, pages 36 and 38. Inland and elevated sites differ; current heatwaves and storms can fall far outside these values.

Swimming: choose warmth, then leave room for wind
A beach-led itinerary has different needs from a sightseeing trip. June through September is a useful starting window for a summer-style stay, but personal swimming comfort, the coast’s exposure and the actual marine forecast decide the day. May can suit a trip with optional swimming; October can suit a trip that still works without it.
The table gives air temperatures at one southern station. It cannot tell you the sea temperature at a northern cove or whether a boat will sail. Keep at least one flexible day around the Gulf of Orosei, and choose accommodation you would enjoy if the excursion moves or is cancelled.

Walking: separate shoulder-season comfort from access
For long exposed walks, compare April–May with late September–October before choosing the hottest part of summer. This is an editorial preference for managing heat, not a guarantee of safe trail conditions. Start with the actual route, elevation, forecast and your experience; rain can make rock and steep approaches difficult.
Goloritzé is a substantial outing, not a short stroll before a full sightseeing day. Cala Luna’s hiking access is demanding, while Cala Mariolu has a technical land approach. In July and August, replace a long midday hike with a town visit, a shorter early walk or another day that fits the forecast; a boat alternative still depends on sea conditions.

Road trips: build a trip that survives a missed sea day
The ten-day Sardinian Adventure has two nights in Cagliari, one in Bosa, two in Alghero, two in Porto Cervo and two in Cala Gonone. It then heads back toward Cagliari via Barumini without a selected last hotel. Leave a departure buffer instead of assuming the final transfer will fit any flight.
In spring, make Cagliari, Nora, Alghero and archaeology the dependable anchors, then confirm seasonal boat and beach services. In summer, reserve controlled beaches and key rooms before locking every move. In autumn, keep the same broad geography but make the Gulf of Orosei day movable and check each property’s operating dates. Use these choices when adapting your own trip.

Reservations belong to a year, not just a month
La Pelosa’s published 2026 reservation period was May 15–October 15, with a €3.50 daily access fee and a rolling release two days before. Teulada also links a seasonal official Tuerredda reservation scheme. A date outside a prior year’s window does not prove that the next season will use the same policy.
As of this November 5, 2026 review, use the official operator pages to confirm the next calendar, booking release and conservation rules. A summer timetable is not evidence of winter boat service, and a hotel’s year-round website is not evidence that every facility is open on your date. Confirm the named harbour, sailing time and cancellation terms before paying.

Crowds and prices: compare your actual dates
July and August put the most pressure on the beach-led version of this trip. For more flexibility, compare May, June or September dates and the services you need; shoulder season does not mean every cove is quiet or every room is cheaper.
Price the same room type, guest count, nights, cancellation terms and final taxes before calling one month better value. Public beach access fees, parking, loungers and boat excursions are separate costs. This guide has no live accommodation quote and makes no island-wide “cheapest month” promise.

Winter is a different Sardinia trip
November through March can work for a city-based visit, archaeology and short weather-led excursions. Plan around daylight, actual opening hours and a flexible road itinerary. The southern airport station in the table is not a proxy for cooler inland uplands.
Choose Cagliari or another town with the restaurants and services you want open, then check your hotel and transport directly. Keep swimming, remote coastal access and seasonal boat trips optional. A winter cultural break does not need to imitate the full ten-day summer circuit.

Before you make the plan.
Is May or September better for Sardinia?
For a mixed trip, both are useful windows to compare. May favors a walking-first plan with optional swimming; September can suit a beach-and-walk balance. Neither guarantees warm water, quiet beaches or a boat sailing.
Are the monthly temperatures sea temperatures?
No. They are ARPAS 1981–2010 averages of daily air-temperature minima and maxima at Cagliari Elmas. They are historical station normals, not a current forecast or an island-wide range.
Can I use the 2026 La Pelosa dates for 2027?
No. Treat them as a dated planning reference and check the official operator for the next season’s access calendar and release rules.
