Things to do in Cagliari
Give Cagliari a day of its own: walk between the Marina and Castello, make time for the market, then choose Poetto for the beach. Nora, Barumini and the southern coves belong on separate excursion days.

| Your time | A workable focus | Leave for another day |
|---|---|---|
| Half a day | Marina and Castello, with a meal and an unhurried viewpoint stop. | The market detour and an archaeological day trip. |
| One full day | Old-town walk, then either San Benedetto market or Poetto. | Nora plus Barumini plus distant beaches. |
| Two days | One city day; one southern excursion to Nora and the Pula area. | An island circuit that spends most of the day in the car. |
| Three days | City, one coastal day, then an inland Barumini visit or more time by the sea. | A claim that every famous Sardinian beach is close to Cagliari. |

01 · Plan the detail
Start low, climb once, finish slowly
Begin around the Marina and Via Roma waterfront, then make the climb into Castello the main part of your city walk. Its elevated streets and viewpoints reward time on foot; return downhill for a meal rather than repeatedly crossing the city by car. Reserve roughly three to six hours for the town visit, depending on museum stops and breaks.
Use a current walking route for the hill approach. Steps, gradients and hot exposed stretches matter more than the distance on a small map. With limited mobility or luggage, check your accommodation’s actual entrance and the current lift or vehicle approach before committing to an uphill walk.

San Benedetto: go to the temporary market
The municipality currently directs visitors to the temporary San Benedetto market in Piazza Nazzari during renovation of the historic building. Use that location when planning the trip; older recommendations for the original market building can send you to the wrong place.
The municipal page lists approaches from Via Sant’Alenixedda, Via Bacaredda and Via Cao di San Marco, and CTM line M at the Via Bacaredda market stop. Check trading hours and the current bus timetable before going. This is a separate detour from the compact Castello–Marina walk, so give it its own time instead of treating it as the next street over.

Poetto is the easy city beach choice
Poetto is a long urban beach east of the historic centre. The city describes about seven kilometres of shore extending toward Quartu. Choose a section, confirm the return bus or taxi, and allow a generous half-day if swimming and lunch are the point.
A room by Poetto and a room in the Marina give you different evenings. The former prioritizes beach access; the latter prioritizes the historic city. Wind, flags and the day’s sea conditions still decide whether to swim. A beach establishment’s umbrella or sunbed is a separate service, not something included in a city stay.

Nora: archaeology and the Pula coast
Nora lies south of Cagliari near Pula, rather than within the city walk. Use the archaeological site as the anchor for a separate excursion, with additional time for the journey, the entry arrangements and an optional beach stop. Allow one to two hours for the site visit itself, then add the journey and any beach time.
The adjacent Nora beach and the archaeological area are different visits. Confirm current site hours and guided-entry requirements using the official links in the place guide; a beach day does not imply admission to the ruins. Avoid adding Tuerredda and Porto Pino merely because they appear together in a list of southern Sardinia stops.

Barumini is the inland alternative
Su Nuraxi at Barumini is north of the city, in a different direction from Nora and the southern coast. Choose it for a day focused on Sardinia’s Nuragic archaeology. The foundation requires a guided tour and describes departures every 30 minutes, with the Su Nuraxi visit lasting about an hour; check the date’s opening schedule before setting out.
Allow for arrival, waiting for a tour and the return journey as well as the visit itself. Wet weather may restrict the archaeological area. The foundation’s combined ticket covers other Barumini sites, but those visits require additional time; do not squeeze them into the one-hour Su Nuraxi allowance.

Fit Cagliari into a real Sardinia route
The saved ten-day Sardinian Adventure begins with two nights in Cagliari and eventually returns toward the city via Barumini, without a selected final Cagliari stay. That is useful for an island road trip, but a short Cagliari break needs no change of hotel just to follow the same pattern.
For a three- or four-night stay, choose the city or Poetto as your base, keep one excursion day flexible, and plan airport or ferry departure separately. Nora is south; Tuerredda is farther along the southwest coast in Teulada; Punta Molentis is on the southeast coast near Villasimius. They are different travel days, not one walking itinerary.

Before you make the plan.
Can I visit Cagliari without a car?
The historic city can be explored on foot, with a suitable route for its hills and steps. Poetto and the relocated market need a separate transport plan. Nora, Barumini and distant beaches are different excursions; compare an actual bus timetable or booked tour before relying on them without a car.
Where is San Benedetto market now?
The municipal visitor page currently directs visitors to the temporary market in Piazza Nazzari during renovation of the historic building. Check that page for the current address and opening information.
Is one day enough for Cagliari?
One day works for the old town plus either a market detour or time at Poetto. It does not comfortably include Nora, Barumini and the distant southern beaches as well.
