8 days in Yellowstone

Yellowstone & Grand Teton

Even after exploring the geothermal valleys of Iceland and New Zealand, Yellowstone managed to impress. Truly one of the most stunning geothermal parks in the world. If you love nature and unique landscapes, it will make you feel on another planet.

Read before choosing the nights

Leave room between the remarkable places.

This two-park plan has an eight-day label and seven saved day entries, the last empty. No eighth-day plan or overnight is supplied. Read the complete saved days below and arrange any additional nights before booking.

Current access changes the saved plan

Boiling River is not a swimming stop. Biscuit Basin is listed as closed and Firehole Lake Drive is closed to vehicles. Those source stops remain visible so the original membership is clear; they are not instructions to enter or drive a closed area.

Give Grand Teton its own days

Choose Lamar or Hayden on the overfull north-to-south day. Make the move to Jackson a transfer day, then choose a Jenny Lake shore visit or a full mountain hike. All five curated southern stays are in Jackson, outside Grand Teton.

Match the actual overnight locations →

Official access checked November 5, 2026: park roads, current closures and services. These saved road trips need the regular-vehicle road season; winter is a different journey.

Your 7-day route at a glance

Explore Yellowstone

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Mammoth

Plan the day: Start at Gardiner and Mammoth, then settle into the northern overnight. Boiling River is not a swimming option.

If plans change: Keep the terraces and arrival unhurried if travel uses most of the day.

Things to do

  1. Roosevelt Arch5m
  2. Boiling RiverClosed source listing
  3. Mammoth Hot Springs1-3h
Day 2Canyon Village

Plan the day: Move via Norris toward the canyon. Choose the south rim if retaining Point Sublime; this is an extension on foot, not a separate north-rim stop.

If plans change: Keep one rim and shorten the walk if the transfer and basin visit take longer.

Things to do

  1. Norris Porcelain Basin1-3h
  2. Grand Canyon Of The Yellowstone1-4h
  3. Point Sublime Trail2h

Suggested stay

Day 3Canyon Village

Plan the day: The saved day links Lamar, Tower, Hayden, the lake and Old Faithful: an overfull zigzag, not a comfortable checklist. Choose Lamar as a northern outing OR Hayden on the southward transfer.

If plans change: Drop Sand Point and other secondary stops if needed to reach the Old Faithful overnight without rushing.

Things to do

  1. Lamar Valley2h
  2. Tower Falls30m
  3. Hayden Valley1-2h
  4. Mud Volcano30m
  5. Sand Point1h
  6. Old Faithful1-2h

Suggested stay

Day 4West Yellowstone

Plan the day: Make Grand Prismatic and a chosen basin walk the core day. The full Fairy Falls walk is longer than the overlook-only outing. Biscuit Basin is closed; Firehole Lake Drive cannot be driven.

If plans change: Choose Fairy Falls OR a longer Upper Geyser Basin visit. Use Fountain Paint Pot only if there is time.

Things to do

  1. Grand Prismatic Spring1h
  2. Fairy Falls & Prismatic Overlook2-3h
  3. Firehole Lake Drive1hOptional add-on
  4. Fountain Paint Pot Trail20m
  5. Biscuit BasinClosed source listing
  6. Upper Geyser Basin1-3h

Suggested stay

Day 5West Yellowstone

Plan the day: This is the inter-park move to Jackson via the South Entrance corridor. Lone Star plus West Thumb plus two Teton viewpoints can overwhelm a transfer day.

If plans change: Choose a short lake or valley stop and defer the full Lone Star walk. Check the South Entrance road before booking this connection.

Things to do

  1. Lone Star Geyser Trail2-3h
  2. West Thumb Geyser Basin1h
  3. Snake River Overlook10m
  4. Schwabacher Landing1h
  5. Jackson Downtown2h

Suggested stay

Day 6Grand Teton

Plan the day: Choose a Jenny Lake shore visit or a full Lake Solitude outing. The latter is a demanding mountain day; snow, boat season and the last return can determine whether it is suitable.

If plans change: Use a shorter Cascade Canyon turnaround or a lakeshore visit. Do not add a full lake loop to the full mountain hike.

Things to do

  1. Jenny Lake3h
  2. Lake Solitude Trail9–13h

Suggested stay

Day 7Grand Teton

Plan the day: The source’s seventh day has no activities or selected overnight. Keep it flexible for Jackson, weather recovery or departure; arrange any additional nights yourself.

If plans change: The itinerary is labelled eight days but contains seven saved day entries. No eighth-day plan or overnight is supplied by the source.

Things to do

Keep this day flexible for travel and exploring.
