Yellowstone

Spring weather is quite unpredictable with park roads opening anywhere from mid-April through May. But if you don't mind monitoring the park website to know when the roads are expected to be cleared, you can witness a beautiful nature awakening and enjoy a pretty much empty park in its opening weeks.

Summers feature the best weather conditions with all park's facilities open, but it comes with hoards of people, adding hours to wait in traffic or in lines. We recommend avoiding July as the busiest month in the park.

Summer

The weather is still nice, there's plenty of active wildlife, and most crowds disappear in late August, making Fall one of the best times to enjoy the park. Lower accommodation prices come as a bonus.

Fall

Winters bring heavy snowfalls with temperatures rarely above freezing, so most roads, hotels, and activities are closed. You can only enter the park through the North Entrance, but you won't see much.

Yellowstone – America's Wild Heart

Norris Porcelain Basin is one of the most unique and colorful thermal areas in Yellowstone. The basin contains a variety of hydrothermal features, including geysers, hot springs, and mud pots. The colors of the features are due to the presence of thermophilic (heat-loving) microorganisms that thrive in the extreme conditions.

The Porcelain Basin is easily accessible via a series of boardwalks, and visitors can get up close to the various features, including the world-renowned Steamboat Geyser. The geysers here are especially noteworthy, as they are some of the hottest and most acidic in the park. The basin can be quite smelly due to the sulfur gases released by the hydrothermal features.
