More about this place
Waimea Canyon & Kōkeʻe Lookouts is a high-country road trip climbs from dry west Kauaʻi into red ravines, green ridges, waterfalls, and sudden windows onto the Nā Pali Coast. The full experience moves beyond the first canyon overlook to Puʻu Hinahina, Kalalau, and Puʻu o Kila, with a short Kōkeʻe walk added only when road, trail, and cloud conditions cooperate.
Reserve six to eight hours for the drive, viewpoints, meals, and unhurried stops. Nonresidents pay park entry and vehicle parking fees, and one parking ticket covers the state-park lots in both Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe. Lookouts minimize hiking, but some paths are uneven and the mountain road is long and winding; check official closure notices before departure because weather, storm damage, or fallen trees can restrict access.
2 expert tips
Original curator notes · check current details.
When the forecast is clear, drive to the highest coastal lookouts first and work back down through the canyon.
Carry layers, water, food, and clean footwear so you do not spread soil-borne forest disease between trails.
