Te Anau or Milford Sound
Te Anau has more town services and sits at the start of the Milford Road. Milford puts you at the far end, but the drive back out remains part of your next day. [4]

New Zealand · trip planning
Choose the next day’s outing before the room. Te Anau and Milford, Fox and Franz Josef, and Mount Cook Village, Twizel and Tekapo create very different journeys.

Mount Cook Village is close to the park walks. Twizel and Tekapo are separate Mackenzie bases with a longer approach to Aoraki; compare the actual address.
Choose the village that fits your tour and onward direction. Crossing Haast Pass as a detour from Queenstown and then doubling back uses substantial time.
Devonport is across Auckland harbour; The Flying Fox is in the Whanganui River valley. A broad source grouping does not make either a central-city or Tongariro trailhead stay. [9][10]
