Aoraki and the Mackenzie Basin travel guide

Separate Mount Cook Village from Twizel and Tekapo. Choose the base and the walk together, then keep room for the SH80 approach.

Explore the places

Before you set off

Mount Cook Village for park days

A village night reduces the approach to Hooker Valley and the Tasman Valley. It offers a different setting and fewer town services than a Mackenzie highway base. [1]

Twizel and Tekapo are separate bases

Choose Twizel for its own Mackenzie setting or Tekapo for lake time. Add the actual road journey before an early Aoraki outing.

Leave the mountain view flexible

Cloud, wind and snow can change the day. Choose a shorter permitted walk or a rest day rather than treating every lake and lookout as compulsory. [7]
