Getting around New Zealand

Decide the island connection and endpoints before filling the days. Flights, ferry check-in, vehicle rules and mountain roads need actual arrangements beyond a line on a map.

Plan the journey

Before you set off

Flying between islands

Check the operating airport, flight time, luggage and car-return process. Do not assume an Auckland city visit fits before a flight to Queenstown.

Crossing Cook Strait

Confirm the ferry, vehicle eligibility, terminals and check-in directly with your chosen provider. Wellington to a Fox Glacier overnight is a major onward journey; split it rather than treating the crossing as a short gap.

Rental cars and road days

Confirm one-way fees, island restrictions and return hours before choosing overnight bases. Add rest after a long international flight and check NZTA before remote drives. [7]

Milford is a day, not a quick detour

Plan the cruise together with the road, safe stops, parking and check-in. Te Anau is a more practical launch point than a return trip from Queenstown when time is limited. [4]

Arrival paperwork

Use the official New Zealand Traveller Declaration and Immigration New Zealand for your passport and journey. Complete the required declaration and check entry requirements for your passport before travel. [8]

A starting point, yours to shape

Compare the saved routes.

Both saved routes visit two islands. Read the day notes, simplify the busiest days and arrange the island connection before fixing your nights.

The details that shape the journey

A little planning. More room to explore.

Questions before you go

Can I take any rental car on the ferry?

Check the rental agreement and ferry operator before booking. Some arrangements require vehicle changes or specific approval; a saved route does not establish eligibility.

Do the maps show verified driving routes?

Collection maps show place locations. They do not verify road access, current travel time, a ferry connection or an operator meeting point.
