When to visit New Zealand

Choose the trip first, then the month. Summer gives more daylight, but alpine weather, lambing closures, tour cancellations and road conditions still shape the journey.

Plan the journey

Before you set off

December–February: summer

Leave room for busy travel periods and book the fixed parts of the trip early. A summer label is not a guarantee of clear mountain views or a glacier flight.

March–May: autumn

Shortening days change how much fits between bases. Keep a high-country forecast check and avoid relying on a long walk after a transfer.

June–August: winter

Build a winter-specific journey around daylight and road conditions. Tongariro is an expert alpine route in winter; summer walking advice does not transfer unchanged. [2][7]

September–November: spring

Snow can persist in alpine terrain. Roys Peak closes for lambing from 1 October through 10 November and reopens 11 November; check current DOC advice before planning the walk. [3]

A starting point, yours to shape

Compare the saved routes.

Both saved routes visit two islands. Read the day notes, simplify the busiest days and arrange the island connection before fixing your nights.

Questions before you go

Is November a good time for hiking?

It can suit many trips, but check each track. Roys Peak’s annual closure extends through 10 November, and snow or wind can still affect high routes. November does not guarantee summer conditions.

Can I use the summer itinerary in winter?

Rebuild the walking and driving expectations for winter. Snow, ice, shorter days and operator schedules can change what is practical; use current DOC and NZTA information.
