Winter Wonders

What strikes us most on our trips to Iceland is that its outworldly combination of volcanoes, glaciers, and massive waterfalls is all on one relatively little island. So if you want to experience all the majesty and diversity of Mother Nature in a compact setting – look no further.

Winter asks for a little more flexibility

Plan a winter Iceland itinerary you can adapt

Start with the southwest and South Coast, put outdoor sightseeing in daylight and choose how far east you can comfortably go. This saved route is a starting point; remove stops or shorten the journey when conditions call for it.

Fewer moves, more options

A Reykjavík base with selected outings suits a shorter trip or travelers who prefer less winter driving. A moving South Coast route brings you nearer the glacier lagoons, but needs flexible overnights and time to return.

Keep a weather day

Leave room before departure for a road or activity cancellation. A four-wheel-drive vehicle does not make wind, ice or poor visibility safe; choose guided outings if winter driving is outside your experience.

Your selected duration or saved route differs from the reviewed seven-day plan. Recheck each day’s distance, daylight and overnight before relying on it.

Choose for the month you will travel

January, February and March have different daylight windows. For earlier winter, compare October, November and December.

Use official road conditions, the weather forecast and Safetravel alerts before each move. Compare the winter planning guide for route tradeoffs and ice-cave experiences before choosing an outing.
