7 days in Iceland

Iceland Highlights

What strikes us most on our trips to Iceland is that its outworldly combination of volcanoes, glaciers, and massive waterfalls is all on one relatively little island. So if you want to experience all the majesty and diversity of Mother Nature in a compact setting – look no further.

A South Coast journey, with room to choose

Plan seven days in Iceland around the south

Iceland Highlights follows Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and South Coast to the glacier lagoons, then returns west. It gives a shorter trip a clear focus; the full island circuit is a different journey. Treat suggested hikes, tours and baths as choices rather than appointments you must fit into one day.

Five days still goes a long way

The saved five-day variant still reaches Jökulsárlón. It compresses the same southern journey into fewer days, so choose fewer activities or turn around earlier. Do not assume a shorter duration means shorter driving.

Seven days or the Ring Road?

Use this route for a southern trip with a return leg. For a whole-island journey through the east and north, compare the ten-day Ring Road itinerary. Leave more flexibility if you plan to add remote detours.

What changes with five, seven or nine days?

The differences below are calculated from the saved activity lists, not the roads you pass through. A town can disappear as a separate activity while remaining on the driving route. Choose your duration in the planner to change the day-by-day plan.

DaysWhat changes from seven daysPlanning tradeoff
5Not listed as separate activities: Vík í Mýrdal, Svartifoss Waterfall, Whale Watching from Reykjavik, Lava Show, Perlan Natural Museum. The glacier-lagoon reach remains. Reduce the activity list and protect the westbound return.
7The default southern route and return to Reykjavík.Moving bases help with the eastern reach; the return journey still needs time.
9Added choices: Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel, Brúarfoss Waterfall, Laugarvatn Fontana, Landmannalaugar Area, Hnausapollur Crater Lake, Sigöldugljúfur Canyon, Caves of Hella. The saved version adds a Highland day. Verify access and transport; it is not simply two extra rest days.

Driving patterns and overnight choices

These describe the default plan’s geography and suggested nights, not measured journey times or confirmed bookings. Add the actual drive, walks, meals and check-in before choosing each day’s activities.

Keep the season in the plan

The southern route does not depend on a Highland crossing, but longer saved variants add Highland stops. Check Landmannalaugar access separately. For short winter days, start with Winter Wonders and compare winter route choices.

Use official road conditions and Safetravel before each move. Compare South Coast bases and southeast bases before choosing the hotel nights.
