The Stórurð hike is a breathtaking trek known for its stunning landscapes and unique rock formations. The hike leads you to Stórurð, or "The Giant's Garden," a striking area filled with massive boulders, vibrant green moss, and picturesque turquoise ponds. The hike is moderate in difficulty, with some steep sections and rocky terrain, but the well-marked path makes it accessible for most hikers. TIP: There are three completely different trails to reach Stórurð: from the Visitor center, from Gönguleidir Vista Point, and the shortest one that we highly recommend — just 7-miles long out and back (the first AllTrails link in the links section). Stórurð Hike

Stuðlagil Canyon is a not-so-hidden gem known for its stunning basalt columns and vibrant blue-green river. It was carved by glacial meltwater and features steep walls lined with striking hexagonal basalt formations that create a dramatic and photogenic landscape.

The contrast between the dark basalt and the turquoise water of the Jökla River makes this canyon one of the most visually captivating spots in Iceland, perfect for those seeking natural beauty away from the more crowded attractions.

TIP: There are two parking lots — one before the bridge (West Side parking) and another after the bridge up the canyon (Klaustrusel). Save yourself an hour of uneventful walking by parking at the second parking where the actual trail begins. Along the way, you’ll pass scenic views of Icelandic mountains and valleys, with the path gradually becoming more defined as you approach the hot spring river.

At the end of the hike, you’ll find a boardwalk that runs alongside the warm river. Here, you can enjoy bathing in sections of the river that vary in temperature depending on proximity to geothermal sources. The water typically ranges between 36°C and 40°C (96°F–104°F), with warmer spots upstream. The area is equipped with makeshift privacy screens for changing.

The Reykjadalur hot spring river is a popular destination, especially during the summer months when the weather is more favorable for hiking and bathing. However, the trail is open year-round, with extra precautions needed in winter due to icy conditions. The valley is also known for its vibrant geothermal moss and colorful hot springs, adding to the surreal beauty of the place.

TIP: The trail is covered in snow and ice during winter months, so good hiking boots with mini-crampons are a must. Also consider that you will be changing on snow, so flip flops or a matt is a great idea, in retrospect.

TIP: There is a decent restaurant right at the parking lot where you can grab some delicious local food (we had a chili soup last winter) and relax with the incredible views.

The Secret Lagoon is one of Iceland's oldest geothermal baths that offers a more tranquil and authentic experience compared to some of the more commercialized hot springs.

Surrounded by stunning natural scenery, including lush greenery, volcanic landscapes, and steam rising from the ground, the Secret Lagoon provides a unique opportunity to soak in warm, mineral-rich waters that are heated by geothermal activity. The water temperature typically hovers around 38-40°C (100-104°F), making it perfect for relaxation throughout the year, even in the colder months.

It is also very cold, with temperatures ranging between 2°C and 4°C throughout the year. Due to its unique characteristics, the Silfra fissure is a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Haifoss Waterfall

Hnausapollur is a volcanic crater lake with striking deep blue water which contrasts with the reddish-brown volcanic slopes that surround it. Formed by a volcanic eruption around 1,100 years ago, Hnausapollur is one of Iceland’s most visually dramatic crater lakes and offers a tranquil, otherworldly setting far from the usual tourist routes.

The crater is easily reached by a short walk from the parking area, where you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding volcanic landscape. There’s no hiking trail around the lake itself, but walking along the rim provides excellent vantage points for photography and quiet reflection.

TIP: Visit on a clear day when the blue water reflects the sky, creating a magical scene. Due to its remote location, Hnausapollur is often uncrowded, offering peace and solitude.

Kerlingarfjöll is a stunning geothermal mountain range in the central Highlands region. It's a paradise for hikers and nature lovers seeking a more secluded and immersive experience in Iceland’s wild interior.

TIP: While Mt. Brennisteinsalda loop is the most popular trail and covers most of the area's unique features, we recommend a slight variation to include Bláhnjúkur, a blue volcanic peak with views over the entire region. As always, check out AllTrails for more details in the links section.

TIP: After hiking, we recommend relaxing in the area's natural hot springs — a perfect way to soak in the surrounding beauty while unwinding. It's just a short walk from the parking lot. Another tip while we're here: the springs are open through the night, making it a perfect romantic spot.

TIP: Consider camping here if you are spending more than one day in the Highlands. This way you can experience the stillness of the Highlands after the day-trippers leave. The local camping site is enormous and does not require advanced booking. Just see the ranger's office on arrival.

TIP: You don't have to cross the last large river by car if you don't feel like it. You can park before the river and get to the area by crossing a pedestrian bridge. But 4x4 vehicle is still essential to reach the park due to the challenging Highland roads.

Sigöldugljúfur Canyon, known as the "Valley of Tears," is a hidden gem in Iceland’s Highlands. TIP: You’ll need a 4x4 vehicle to access the F208 Highland route. From the parking area, a short 20-30 minute hike leads you to the canyon’s edge, where you'll see stunning views of waterfalls plunging into the turquoise river below.

Sigöldugljúfur Canyon

Dettifoss is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, boasting a stunning cascade that measures 328 feet wide and drops 144 feet into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. The sheer volume of water, fed by the Vatnajökull glacier, creates a mesmerizing spectacle, with thundering sounds and mist that rise from the falls, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and photographers.

Accessing Dettifoss is easy, with designated parking areas near both the east and west sides of the waterfall. The trails leading to the falls are well-marked, with the east side being slightly shorter and more accessible, while the west side offers a more rugged and wild experience.

TIP: Be prepared for the mist generated by the waterfall, which can be quite refreshing, especially on warm days. Dress in waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes, as the trail can be muddy and slippery.

Goðafoss Waterfall
