10 days in Iceland

Ring Road Adventure

What strikes us most on our trips to Iceland is that its outworldly combination of volcanoes, glaciers, and massive waterfalls is all on one relatively little island. So if you want to experience all the majesty and diversity of Mother Nature in a compact setting – look no further.

A practical starting plan

Plan your Iceland Ring Road trip

This ten-day route starts in Reykjavík, follows the Golden Circle and South Coast, continues through the east and north, and returns via Snæfellsnes. It suits travelers who want variety and are happy to move between bases most nights.

Seven days or ten?

For a shorter trip, Iceland Highlights concentrates on the south and returns the same way. Ten days lets you continue around the island, with more driving and fewer spare days.

What this route leaves out

The default loop does not cover the Westfjords or the interior Highlands. Treat hikes, tours and baths as choices, rather than trying to fit every suggested activity into the same day.

Customize this route

Choose your dates and duration, then adjust stops in this route’s planner. Suggested stays are starting points; availability depends on your dates.

Driving and overnight bases for the ten-day plan

These are driving estimates via the stops named in each row. Unlisted stops and detours are excluded, including Reynisfjara and Eldhraun on day 4. Add time for sightseeing, meals and breaks. These are not the length of your whole day.

Road-routing estimates checked , using OSRM and OpenStreetMap. No live traffic, closures or weather are included. Choose dates and check current road conditions before relying on a drive time.

Let the season shape the route

Planning a bathing stop? Compare Iceland’s hot springs by route, facilities and detour, then bring your shortlist back to this plan.

The curated Ring Road plan favors April–October. For winter, start with Winter Wonders and allow more flexibility for daylight and changing conditions.

If wind, snow or a closure changes the day, shorten the sightseeing list and reconsider the next overnight move. A bath, museum or café can replace an exposed stop when local access permits; avoid adding a long detour to make up for it.

Check official road conditions and Safetravel before each move. For Blue Lagoon or a volcanic-area hike, also check the operator’s current notices and local access guidance.

Your 10-day route at a glance

Explore Iceland

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Arrival & Tasting ReykjavikReykjavík

Plan the day: Keep arrival day light: Reykjavík’s city sights are the starting point. Choose a lagoon visit or a food walk only if your arrival and energy leave room.

If plans change: After a late flight, go straight to your Reykjavík base and move the extra activity to another day.

Things to do

  1. Blue Lagoon3hOptional add-on
  2. Hallgrimskirkja30m
  3. Harpa Concert Hall1h
  4. Reykjavík Food Walk3hOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 2Timeless Golden CircleGolden Circle

Plan the day: Follow Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss before settling into the Golden Circle base. Snorkeling, Brúarfoss and a lagoon visit add time; choose rather than stack them.

If plans change: With poor conditions, shorten the stop list and check access before committing to the next drive.

Things to do

  1. Thingvellir Park1-2h
  2. Silfra Fissure Snorkeling3hOptional add-on
  3. Brúarfoss Waterfall2hOptional add-on
  4. Geysir Thermal Field1h
  5. Gullfoss Waterfall1h
  6. Secret Lagoon2hOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 3Iconic Falls & Black SandsSouth Coast

Plan the day: Move along the South Coast to Vík, with Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss as the main stops. The Reykjadalur hike and ATV tour are optional additions, not promises for the same day.

If plans change: If exposed stops are unsuitable, reduce them rather than replacing each one with another long outing.

Things to do

  1. Reykjadalur Valley3-4hOptional add-on
  2. Seljalandsfoss Waterfall1h
  3. Black Lava Fields ATV Tour2hOptional add-on
  4. Skógafoss Waterfall1h
  5. Dyrhólaey Lighthouse1h

Suggested stay

Day 4Glacial Ice Caves & CanyonsSouth Coast

Plan the day: Continue toward Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Choose a cave tour or a horse ride if you want an organized activity; leave room for the beach and canyon stops. The drive estimate does not include the Reynisfjara or Eldhraun detours.

If plans change: Use current coastal and trail guidance to decide whether the beach or canyon fits the conditions.

Things to do

  1. Reynisfjara Beach1h
  2. Katla Ice Cave Tour3hOptional add-on
  3. Eldhraun Lava Field15m
  4. Black Sand Horse Riding1hOptional add-on
  5. Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon1-2h

Suggested stay

Day 5Glacial Hikes, Lagoons & DiamondsSoutheast

Plan the day: Choose the Svartifoss walk or a guided glacier hike, then focus on Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach. Vestrahorn is an extra detour; check the remaining time before adding it.

If plans change: If a booked activity changes, keep the day shorter and confirm lagoon/coastal access rather than filling the gap with another long drive.

Things to do

  1. Svartifoss Waterfall2h
  2. Skaftafell Glacial Hike3-5hOptional add-on
  3. Glacier Lagoon Jökulsárlón1-2h
  4. Diamond Beach30m
  5. Vestrahorn & Stokksnes1-2hOptional add-on
Day 6Scenic Fjords and TownsEast Fjords

Plan the day: This is a substantial transfer through the east. Choose how much time to spend at Hengifoss versus Seyðisfjörður; the driving estimate routes via both, before your Egilsstaðir-area stay.

If plans change: If road or weather conditions slow the transfer, skip an outing or the bath and prioritize reaching the next base.

Things to do

  1. Höfn Town1h
  2. Hengifoss Waterfall2-3hOptional add-on
  3. Seydisfjordur1h
  4. Vök Baths1-2hOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 7Mývatn Volcanic PathsNortheast

Plan the day: Continue toward Mývatn, with time needed for the canyon and Dettifoss approaches as well as the drive. The crater hike and baths are optional; check access before committing to waterfall detours.

If plans change: If an approach road is restricted, keep to the permitted route and reduce the sightseeing plan. Check the official road map rather than assuming a detour is open.

Things to do

  1. Stuðlagil Canyon2h
  2. Dettifoss Waterfall1h
  3. Hverir Geothermal Valley1h
  4. Hverfjall Crater1-2hOptional add-on
  5. Mývatn Nature Baths1-3hOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 8Majestic Whales & More FallsNortheast

Plan the day: Use Húsavík and Goðafoss as the route anchors. Choose a whale-watching trip or a longer soak if time allows, then continue west to the Skagafjörður base.

If plans change: A sailing cancellation is a reason to slow down, not to add an unplanned detour before the long overnight move.

Things to do

  1. Whale Watching from Húsavík3hOptional add-on
  2. Húsavík Town1h
  3. Geosea Baths1-3hOptional add-on
  4. Goðafoss Waterfall30m
Day 9Iconic Mountains & CoastlineSnæfellsnes

Plan the day: This is the longest driving day in the sampled plan, via Hvitserkur and Kirkjufell to Búðir. Keep the stop list light; with more days, consider splitting this transfer instead.

If plans change: If conditions or delays make the transfer too long, reconsider the overnight move rather than rushing the final stops.

Things to do

  1. Hvitserkur Rock30mOptional add-on
  2. Kirkjufell Mountain1h
  3. Búðakirkja1h

Suggested stay

Day 10Reykjavik & DepartureReykjavík

Plan the day: Return toward Reykjavík and Keflavík Airport. Allow room for the car return and your flight; a city activity belongs here only if the departure schedule leaves time.

If plans change: Skip optional outings when departure timing is tight. A volcanic-area hike also requires current local access guidance.

Things to do

  1. Whale Watching from Reykjavik3hOptional add-on
  2. Lava Show1hOptional add-on
  3. Fagradalsfjall Hike4hOptional add-on
