Swiss towns & villages for your route

Choose places to linger rather than a list to complete: Lucerne and Bern for city walks, Grindelwald or Zermatt as mountain bases, and Lungern, Lauterbrunnen or Cully for a slower stop.

The choices that matter

Make the journey fit

A mountain base or a passing stop?

Grindelwald and Zermatt work best when the overnight supports repeated outings. Lungern can fit the journey west and Cully a Lavaux day. [2]

Keep the city day usable

Arrival time, luggage and the next departure decide how much of Lucerne, Bern or Geneva you can enjoy. The saved final day needs fewer stops when there is a flight. [2]

Do not drive into Zermatt

Leave private cars in Täsch and allow the shuttle and final village connection. [9]

8 places
  1. 01 · Bern old town

Make Bern your city pause between Lucerne and the Bernese Oberland. Explore the arcaded streets and the Aare-side viewpoints without adding a mountain excursion to the same afternoon.

  2. 02 · Grindelwald village

Use Grindelwald as a base for First and the Jungfrau network. Separate village time from the higher excursions rather than counting them as one short visit.

  3. 03 · Lauterbrunnen valley

Choose Lauterbrunnen for village and valley scenery below the high mountain railways. It is a different base and branch of the network from Grindelwald.

  4. 04 · Cully / Lavaux

Use Cully as a lakeside stop in Lavaux. Decide whether you want village time or a longer vineyard walk before scheduling a tasting.

  5. 05 · Geneva city

Make Geneva a city visit or a practical departure base at the western end of the lake. It is not interchangeable with Montreux or the Lavaux villages.

  6. 06 · Lucerne city

Use Lucerne for an easy city-and-lake opening before heading into the mountains. Keep a riverside walk and old-town time flexible around arrival.

  7. 07 · Lungern, Obwalden

Stop in Lungern for village and lake scenery on the route toward the Bernese Oberland. It is south of Lucerne, rather than a city neighborhood.

  8. 08 · Zermatt village

Use village time as the gentler part of a Zermatt stay, with separate days for the mountain railways and walks.
