When to visit Switzerland

Choose the season around the experience: higher walks need their own snow and access check, while city, valley and lake days give you more choices around lift maintenance.

The choices that matter

Make the journey fit

May and June: separate green valleys from high trails

The saved routes include May, but that label does not establish snow-free Faulhorn or Riffelsee walking. Check the particular lift and trail. Build the early trip around lower stops and choose a high outing only when its conditions fit. [3][11]

July and August: protect the main mountain day

Reserve the excursion that matters most and leave another day flexible for visibility. Gornergrat advertises seasonal Sunday sunrise departures in July–September; book and check the actual date rather than assuming every first train reaches sunrise. [10]

September and October: check the last service

A fine autumn day does not extend a timetable. Pilatus Kriens cableways are scheduled closed October19–November27,2026; other legs have separate seasons. For Oeschinensee the uphill reservation rule runs through November8,2026. Confirm future-year schedules separately. [7][8]

Winter and late autumn: design another kind of trip

Do not reuse a summer hiking day unchanged. Check the named railway, signed winter route and local alerts, or choose a city, lake-shore or valley day instead. Triftbahn’s 2026 closure applies beyond the normal seasonal planning. [5][3]
