Switzerland hikes & mountain walks

Choose the walk by its access, return and terrain. A short lakeside visit, a higher Faulhorn day and the long 2026 Trift approach should not be treated as interchangeable outings.

The choices that matter

Make the journey fit

A First walking day

Keep Faulhorn as the main outing and use the last gondola to set your return. Cliff Walk and adventure queues are optional choices, not automatic additions. [4]

Trift needs a different2026 plan

The cable car is closed for 2026. Grimselwelt describes3½–4 hours from the valley station to the bridge one way. Leave it out of the busy Lucerne–Bern transfer day. [5][6]

Two lake walks, two areas

Oeschinensee is above Kandersteg; Seealpsee starts from Wasserauen in Appenzell. Choose the area first and check path conditions and the return. [8][2]

5 places
  1. 01 · First / Faulhorn, Bernese Oberland

Choose a substantial walking day above Grindelwald, with Bachalpsee and the Faulhorn direction as the focus. Set your turnaround by the return lift and conditions.

  2. 02 · Kandersteg / Oeschinensee

Plan Oeschinensee from Kandersteg, with a gondola approach and a walk to the lake. A lakeside visit and a longer panorama hike require different time and fitness.

  3. 03 · Wasserauen / Appenzell

Plan Seealpsee as an Appenzell walking outing from Wasserauen. It is in eastern Switzerland, not near Lucerne.

  4. 04 · Gadmen / Nessental, Haslital

Trift is a substantial mountain hike near Gadmen. The operator says the Triftbahn will not operate during the 2026 season.

  5. 05 · Riffelsee / Rotenboden above Zermatt

Choose Riffelsee for the chance of a Matterhorn reflection. Clear sky, calm water and safe access are conditions to hope for, not a promised result.
