Before choosing the nights

Give the mountain days room.

This route mixes cities, mountain outings and substantial transfers. Seealpsee is in Appenzell, not Lucerne. The Trift hike and the Jungfraujoch–Kander valley–Zermatt day need a simpler plan before booking.

Read the complete day notes

The saved places and overnights remain below. Use the notes to choose the main outing and move optional stops; the map is not a timed connection plan.

Choose rail or car deliberately

The saved plan is a road trip. Rail can connect the main bases, but the detours and inland stays need separate connections. Private cars stop at Täsch before Zermatt.

Your 7-day route at a glance

Explore Switzerland

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Lucerne

Plan the day: Choose Lucerne and Pilatus for the opening day, or give Seealpsee its own Appenzell day and extra overnight. Seealpsee, Pilatus and Lucerne together leave little room for arrival and the long east–west journey. The saved night is on the Gütsch hillside above Lucerne.

If plans change: After a late arrival, stay in Lucerne and move Pilatus to another weather window.

Things to do

  1. Seealpsee3-4hOptional add-on
  2. Mount Pilatus3h
  3. Lucerne2h

Suggested stay

Day 2Bern

Plan the day: Take the Lungern corridor and choose how much time to leave for Bern. The Triftbahn operator confirms no service in 2026; reaching the bridge on foot from the valley is roughly 3½–4 hours one way, before returning. Omit Trift from this transfer day.

If plans change: If dedicating a future day to Trift, verify the full walking approach, service and return, then move Bern to another day.

Things to do

  1. Lungern1-2h
  2. Chälrütirank Viewpoint10mOptional add-on
  3. Trift Bridge Hike4hOptional add-on
  4. Bern3h

Suggested stay

Day 3Grindelwald

Plan the day: Use Lauterbrunnen and Staubbach as a valley-focused visit before reaching Grindelwald. Allow the separate connection between the two villages and the hotel arrival.

If plans change: Shorten the valley stops when the transfer or weather needs the time. Keep higher excursions for the following days.

Things to do

  1. Lauterbrunnen1h
  2. Staubbach Waterfall2h
  3. Grindelwald2h

Suggested stay

Day 4Grindelwald

Plan the day: Choose a long Faulhorn walk or a First adventure day. Add the Cliff Walk only when the lift, weather and return margin work. Queues and the walking route can use most of the day.

If plans change: Turn back early enough for the final gondola. If the high day does not suit conditions, keep village time instead.

Things to do

  1. First Cliff Walk30m
  2. First Adventure Park1-3hOptional add-on
  3. Faulhorn Trail4-5h

Suggested stay

Day 5Grindelwald

Plan the day: Choose Jungfraujoch OR a Kander valley lake outing before the move to Zermatt. A full Jungfraujoch return, Blausee, Oeschinensee and the Täsch–Zermatt arrival do not make a relaxed single day. Protect time for the village hotel connection.

If plans change: Keep the main excursion and move the other lakes or Jungfraujoch to another night in the Oberland. Confirm any Oeschinensee gondola time slot.

Things to do

  1. Jungfraujoch3-4h
  2. Blausee1hOptional add-on
  3. Oeschinensee3hOptional add-on
  4. Zermatt Village1-3h

Suggested stay

Day 6Zermatt

Plan the day: Choose a specific Matterhorn viewpoint or marked walk; this stop is not a summit-climbing plan. A long mountain day leaves less room for the descent and move to Whitepod in Les Cerniers above Monthey. Private-car travelers must also collect the car at Täsch.

If plans change: Keep the Zermatt outing shorter, add a night, or change the onward base. Whitepod says pods require about20 minutes on foot from reception and parking.

Things to do

  1. Matterhorn6h

Suggested stay

Day 7Lake Geneva

Plan the day: Select eastern Lake Geneva around Chillon and Lavaux OR a fuller Geneva visit. A tasting at Grandvaux, Cully, the castle and Geneva all need separate approaches and time. Leave a departure day simpler.

If plans change: With an early onward journey, stay near the departure point and move the sightseeing to another day.

Things to do

  1. Château de Chillon1h
  2. Cully1h
  3. Domaine De La Crausaz2hOptional add-on
  4. Geneva2hOptional add-on
