TIP: Consider camping here if you are spending more than one day in the Highlands. This way you can experience the stillness of the Highlands after the day-trippers leave. The local camping site is enormous and does not require advanced booking. Just see the ranger's office on arrival.

TIP: You don't have to cross the last large river by car if you don't feel like it. You can park before the river and get to the area by crossing a pedestrian bridge. But a 4x4 vehicle is still essential to reach the park due to the challenging Highland roads.

Dyrhólaey Lighthouse is perched atop the Dyrhólaey promontory, offering panoramic views of some of the country’s most dramatic landscapes. Built in 1927, the lighthouse stands as a beacon over the wild Atlantic Ocean, guiding ships safely along Iceland’s rugged coast.

Its location on the Dyrhólaey peninsula makes it a prime spot to witness stunning views of the Reynisfjara black sand beach, the sea stacks of Reynisdrangar, and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier in the distance.

Explore the surrounding cliffs, which are home to various bird species, including puffins during the summer months. The area is known for its striking rock formations, including the massive arch-shaped rock formation from which Dyrhólaey gets its name.

TIP: Dyrhólaey is one of the best places to observe puffins. To witness these charming birds, arrive from late May through the summer when they are nesting.

Dyrhólaey Lighthouse

The Eldhraun Lava Field is a vast expanse of black lava rocks that were formed during one of Iceland's most massive volcanic eruptions in 1783-1784. The contrast between the dark lava and the vibrant moss creates a surreal, otherworldly scene that is both peaceful and eerie.

The field covers an area of over 565 square kilometers and is home to several mossy craters and lava tubes. A hike through this unique landscape is a must-do for those who appreciate natural wonders and geology.

TIP: The field is enormous, so you can simply enjoy the views while driving on the highway along the South Coast and stop at numerous parking outlets. The "directions" button will take you to one of the more popular stops with several marked trails through the fields.

Eldhraun is at its best during golden hour when the sunlight softens the landscape, and the moss appears even more vibrant.

The Fimmvörðuháls Trail is among the most famous and scenic hiking routes in Iceland, connecting the Skógafoss Waterfall in the south to the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve.

Stretching about 16 miles, this challenging hike takes you through a diverse landscape of waterfalls, glaciers, volcanic craters, and dramatic mountain views. It offers a unique opportunity to experience Iceland's raw, untamed beauty, from lush green valleys to the volcanic aftermath of recent eruptions.

Starting at Skógafoss, the trail begins with a steep climb alongside the Skógá River, passing over 20 smaller waterfalls along the way. As you ascend, you’ll reach the high plateau, where views of glaciers like Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull dominate the horizon. The hike passes between two volcanic craters, Magni and Móði, formed during the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, making the landscape here particularly unique, with fresh lava fields and rugged terrain.

The trek typically takes 7 to 10 hours, depending on weather and individual pace, and is best undertaken between mid-June and early September when conditions are safer. You can either complete the trail in a day or break it up with an overnight stay.

TIP: If you decide to split your journey into two days, there are two basic mountain huts along the route — Baldvinsskáli and Fimmvörðuskáli. Both huts should be booked far in advance, and their booking process is quite painful, so think twice if it's worth it. You can find direct booking links in the links section above.

TIP: It’s also crucial to come prepared for rapidly changing weather, dress in layers, and bring proper hiking gear. As this is a long and demanding trek, sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, and food supplies are essential. Given Iceland’s unpredictable weather and the trail’s elevation changes, you should also check weather conditions before setting out and consider joining a guided tour if unfamiliar with the terrain.

TIP: This is a one-way trail that ends on the other side of the ridge in Þórsmörk, so you need to arrange your transfer back to the parking lot at Skógar.

You can explore this place via various walking paths that wind along the canyon's rim. The hiking trails vary in difficulty, catering to all levels of adventurers. Along the way, you'll encounter vantage points that provide stunning perspectives of the canyon’s winding contours. Birdwatching is also popular here, as the canyon is home to various bird species that nest in its cliffs during the warmer months.

TIP: Consider arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid crowds and capture the canyon in the soft, golden light.

Gígjagjá Cave (also known as the Yoda Cave ) is a dramatic lava cave that gained fame for its uncanny resemblance to the silhouette of Yoda from Star Wars — especially when viewed from the inside looking out.

What makes it special isn’t just the shape — it’s the setting. The cave opens onto a black sand expanse with distant sea views, giving it an otherworldly feel. The cave itself is large and walkable, with layered basalt walls, soft natural light filtering in, and moody acoustics.

It's an easy stop that feels like a secret — especially since it’s often missed by tour buses.

Gígjagjá (Yoda Cave)

Hjörleifshöfði is a historic, isolated rocky promontory located on the Mýrdalssandur black sand plains. It stands out dramatically against the surrounding flat landscape and holds significant historical importance as the burial place of Hjörleifur Hróðmarsson, one of the first Norse settlers in Iceland.

The hike is a moderate loop trail that takes about an hour to complete. Starting from the base of the promontory, the trail leads you up a gentle slope to the top, where you can explore Hjörleifur’s burial mound and the ruins of a farmhouse abandoned in the early 20th century. As you hike, you'll also be rewarded with sweeping views over the black sands, the ocean, and even glimpses of the distant glaciers. The trail is well-marked and suitable for most hikers, though the winds can be strong at the summit.

TIP: The beach is known for its powerful sneaker waves, which create a mesmerizing, but dangerous, spectacle. Due to strong currents and unpredictable waves, it's important to keep a safe distance from the water's edge while enjoying the view.

Reynisfjara Beach

Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland's most picturesque waterfalls. Plunging 200 feet from the cliffs of the former coastline, its most unique feature is the walking path that allows you to journey behind the waterfall, offering a rare and awe-inspiring perspective.

Take a short hike along the marked path to experience the waterfall from various angles, including the breathtaking view from behind the falls. Heavy snow, ice, or slippery conditions can make the path behind the falls dangerous, so it is often closed from late autumn through early spring, depending on the weather.

TIP: There is an additional waterfall nearby — Gljúfrabúi, a hidden gem tucked away within a narrow canyon just a short walk from Seljalandsfoss which makes it totally worth a trip.

TIP: Bring waterproof gear if you plan to walk behind the waterfall, as the spray can be quite heavy.

TIP: Visiting during sunset or sunrise offers not only spectacular lighting for photos, but it's also far less crowded at these times as most tourist buses take time to get to and from the falls to Reykjavik.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Skógafoss is one of Iceland's most iconic and breathtaking waterfalls. With a height of 197 feet and a width 82 feet, Skógafoss is renowned for its powerful cascade that plunges over a rocky cliff, creating a stunning visual spectacle. The waterfall is fed by the Skógá River, which originates from the glaciers of the nearby Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

You will be struck by the sheer force of the water as it crashes down, creating a mist that frequently results in vibrant rainbows on sunny days. TIP: To get a more panoramic view, follow a staircase to an observation platform at the top of the waterfall, offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscapes, including the rugged cliffs and the expansive plains below. You can even follow a trail up the river for a few minutes for more unique sights.

Skógafoss is not just a stunning natural wonder but also holds cultural significance. According to local folklore, it is said that a Viking buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall, and some treasure hunters believe they have found remnants of it over the years. The area surrounding Skógafoss is also rich in hiking opportunities, with trails that lead to other scenic spots, such as the Fimmvörðuháls trek, making it a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

The combination of its impressive height, the beauty of the cascading water, and the picturesque surroundings makes Skógafoss a must-visit site for anyone traveling through Iceland.

Skógafoss Waterfall

The Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck is one of Iceland’s most surreal and iconic landmarks — the skeletal remains of a U.S. Navy DC-3 that crash-landed on a black sand beach in 1973. While the crew survived, the abandoned fuselage was left behind and has since become a haunting, photogenic site against the vast, windswept desert of Sólheimasandur.

What makes it worth visiting is the sheer contrast: silver metal against endless black volcanic sand, no signs of life or structure in sight. It’s eerie, cinematic, and oddly peaceful — a favorite spot for photographers and travelers chasing Iceland’s wilder side. You can even step inside the wreck for an up-close look at its weathered, graffiti-tagged interior.

TIP: The wreck is only accessible on foot or by shuttle, but we highly recommend taking the shuttle to save you from the 3-mile walk across flat but windy terrain each way (usually 1.5h total).

TIP: The shuttle is $25 round trip and departs every 30 minutes from 10 am to 5 pm. You can also purchase a one-way ticket for $15.

TIP: It can get crowded mid-day during summer, so we recommend getting there earlier or later in the day to not wait in line.

Solheimasandur Plane Wreck

Vík í Mýrdal, or simply Vík, is a small village on Iceland’s southern coast, famous for its black sand beaches and striking landscapes. Nestled beneath the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which covers the Katla volcano, it’s known for Reynisfjara Beach with its basalt sea stacks and powerful waves.

The village’s hilltop church offers great views, and Vík serves as a convenient base for visiting nearby waterfalls like Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, as well as glacier tours on Mýrdalsjökull.

For something special, visit Vík in winter to witness the Northern Lights over the black sand beach. In summer, explore the cliffs at Dyrhólaey to see puffins. Always stay back from the unpredictable waves at Reynisfjara, as they can be dangerous even when they appear calm.

The Crystal Ice Cave is a unique natural wonder inside the Vatnajökull glacier. The cave's walls are made of translucent ice that glows in various shades of blue and turquoise, creating a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere.

The caves in this glacier are formed and destroyed every summer, so there is no single permanent cave. All the caves throughout the years feature the same unique characteristics, making it worth the visit every year.

The only way to explore these marvels is taking a guided tour of the cave, which typically starts at Jökulsárlón Lagoon parking lot and consists of a 30-minute ride on a Super Jeep to the glacier, a short hike, and then exploring multiple caves.

Diamond Beach

Fjallsárlón Lagoon is a serene glacial lagoon located just west of its more famous neighbor, Jökulsárlón. It sits at the base of the Fjallsjökull glacier, a tongue of the massive Vatnajökull ice cap.

What sets Fjallsárlón apart is its more tranquil and intimate atmosphere, with fewer visitors and closer proximity to the glacier itself. Large icebergs break off from the glacier and float quietly in the lagoon, creating a stunning and peaceful scene against the backdrop of towering ice and rugged mountains.

Explore Fjallsárlón by walking along the shore to admire the icebergs or by taking a boat tour that navigates through the floating ice. The smaller size of the lagoon allows for closer views of the glacier than at Jökulsárlón, making it a fantastic spot for photography and quiet reflection. It's an easy stop along the Ring Road, with a short walk from the parking area to the water’s edge.

Fjallsárlón Lagoon

Höfn is a small fishing town surrounded by dramatic scenery, including the Atlantic Ocean, rugged mountains, and expansive glaciers. Being a quieter town compared to Iceland’s more tourist-heavy spots, Höfn offers a peaceful yet scenic retreat.

Höfn is particularly famous for its fresh seafood, especially langoustine (Icelandic lobster), which is celebrated annually during the town’s Lobster Festival. 

TIP: There are a few restaurants to get a taste of Höfn's incredible seafood scene: Pakkhús Restaurant — best-known for fresh seafood, Humarhöfnin (Lobster House) — specializes in lobster and known for their delicious, buttery langoustine tails, Ósinn Restaurant — just outside the town with beautiful views and lobster pizzas.

Exploring Höfn is a relaxing experience, with its small harbor, cozy cafes, and seafood restaurants offering fresh local dishes. The town’s glacier museum provides fascinating insight into the history and science of Iceland’s glaciers. Additionally, the nearby coastline offers peaceful walking trails with stunning views of the Vatnajökull glacier, as well as opportunities to spot wildlife like seals.

Höfn Town

Jökulsárlón Lagoon is a breathtaking glacier lagoon and home to a variety of floating icebergs, some of which are up to 1,000 years old. Its massive icebergs have broken off from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, drifting slowly across the turquoise water before heading out to sea.

The icebergs, with their deep blue hues and unique shapes, create an ever-changing, surreal landscape that feels both peaceful and dramatic. The lagoon is also home to seals, which can often be seen swimming among the ice or lounging on the floating chunks.

We recommend exploring Jökulsárlón by walking along the lagoon’s edge and then taking a boat tour that gets you up close to the icebergs. Amphibious vehicles and smaller zodiac boats offer different perspectives, allowing you to witness the sheer size of the icebergs and the lagoon.

TIP: Boat tours can get fully booked weeks ahead, not only during the peak summer months but well into September and October, so book your tours in advance, especially the more adventurous Zodiac tour!

Jökulsárlón Lagoon

Múlagljúfur Canyon is one of Iceland’s hidden treasures, located near the Vatnajökull glacier in the southeast. This dramatic and lesser-known canyon is carved deep into the landscape, featuring steep moss-covered cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and the Múlakvísl river flowing through its base.

The canyon's lush greenery contrasts with the rugged terrain, making it feel like a secluded, untouched natural paradise. The scenery is breathtaking, offering a more intimate and wild experience compared to Iceland’s more frequented spots.

To reach the canyon, you'll embark on a moderately challenging 1.2-mile hike, which takes between 1 and 1.5 hours one way, leading through a narrow valley with stunning views of the surrounding glacier, waterfalls, and eventually, the canyon itself.

TIP: Visiting Múlagljúfur on a clear day makes it so much more rewarding when the glacier and distant mountains are visible. Since this spot is still under the radar for most tourists, you’ll likely have the canyon mostly to yourself.

TIP: Be sure to wear good hiking shoes, as the path can be rocky and muddy in places.

Svartifoss, or the "Black Falls," is a unique waterfall known for its backdrop of dramatic black basalt columns that resemble a giant pipe organ formed by ancient volcanic activity. The waterfall tumbles over these hexagonal columns, creating a stunning visual contrast between the dark rock and the white water, making it one of Iceland’s most photographed and iconic waterfalls.

To reach Svartifoss, you'll embark on a moderate 1-mile hike. The trail winds through beautiful landscapes, offering views of other smaller waterfalls and lush greenery along the way. The hike takes around 45 minutes each way and is well-marked, making it accessible for most travelers.

TIP: If you're into photography, a polarizing filter will help capture the unique textures and contrasts of the basalt columns and flowing water.
